Over Calling Of
Game By Umpire
By CARL LUNDQUIST
United Press Sports Writer
NEW YORK. Aug. 30. (U.PJ—The
American league's new "baseball
unlimited" rule touched off one of
the most heated feuds in years to-
day between the New York Yan-
kees and the Cleveland Indians.
It brought about action by
League President Will Harridge,
who had to deny a protest by the
Yankees over the calling of yester-
day's second game of a double
header with the Indians in rain-
swept Yankee Stadium after six
hours and 15 minutes. The Yan-
kees won the opener, fi to 5 ill 10
innings and had a 4 to 0 lead after
2«a innings of the second game
when Senior Umpire Bill Sum-
mers called it because of rain af-
ter a session in which all but a few
of the original 57,871 fans, who
came at 1:30 p. m., stuck it out
to the watery end.
_ The single victory lifted the
Yankees within two percentage
points of first place, as the league-
leading Detroit Tigers lost their
night game to Washington, 5 to 4.
But a Yank win in the second
game—and that seemed to be the
way things were going—would
have given New York first place.
The rule which started the feud
was put into effect upon recom-
mendation of Baseball Commis-
sioner A. B. Chandler, who set the
precedent in the 1!)4! World Ser-
ies. It' calls for park lights to be
turned on to insure completion of
all games from now until the end
of the season—weather permitting.
General Manager George Weiss
of the Yankees telephoned Har-
ridge in Washington directly after
Summers called the game and
claimed that the veteran umpire
had acted arbitrarily and against
the spirit of the new rule. Weiss
wanted the game resumed today at
the point it was stopped. Harridge
ruled it would have to be replayed
from the beginning.
Rain had held up the double-
header three times and twice Sum-
mers had ordered play resumed.
This time without much hesitation,
he called it off.
A sweep would have put New-
York in front in the race for the
first time all year, knocking De-
troit out of the lead for the first
time since June 10.

Greentr.ee Stable's Caput, the
"horse of the year" in 1949 an<f
one of the most courageous colts
ever to answqr a call to the post,
was withdrawn from racing . and
sent to |tud today.
An aggravated knee injury
forced the retirement of the four-
year-old colt, who was scheduled
t start in Saturday's Washington
Park handicap at Chicago.
John Hay (Jock) Whitney, co-
owner of Green tree Stable with his
sister, Mrs. Charles Shipman Pay-
son, decided yesterday to retire Ca-
pot after the colt showed signs of
soreness in his left knee.
Police Battle In
Riot At Harlingen
HARLINGEN, Tex., Aug. 30
<U.R>- Police swapped punches with
players last night when a Rio
Grande Valley league baseball
game between Harlingen and Del
Rio ended in a fist-swinging riot.
The game was forfeited to Har-
lingen, 9-0, and three Del Rio
players were hustled off the play-
ing field.
It all started in the top of the
second inning when Del Rio's Jer-
ry Jackson claimed he had foul-
tipped a dropped third strike.
Plate umpire John Mitchell refused
to change his decision and Jack-
son gave him a pus'n.
Mitchell, however, permitted
Jackson to take his place at second
base in the bottom half of the
second, hut Del Rio catcher Frank
Mormino made a remark as he ad-
justed his mask and the umpire
thumbed him out of the game.
Mormino refused to leave, and
manager Bob Hamric and Jackson
headed for Mitchell. Four police-
men rushed to the plate and the
fighting started. The police detail
was reinforced by eight off-duty
cops and the rest of the Del Rio
team swarmed them.
The police did not get mad until
Hamric popped veteran police Lt.
Wes Fonville on the jaw. Then
they overpowered Hamric. Mor-
mino and Jackson and carried them
off the field.
The game was forfeited after
Del Rio Club Owner Arturo Gon-
zales ordered hi^ team off the
field.
