Our re-
cent string of
100-plus-de-
gree days has
been a little
rough on
some of us
"mature cod-
gers". Seems
that the heat
or humidity or something zaps our energy a lot
quicker than it used to and keeps it a lot longer. By
my standards, 1 am not old by any stretch of the
imagination - although I have been around for more
than half a century (that hurts!). I think the real
problem is that I have gotten soft - and I like it.
Some of us remember the "old days" when
school didn't start until after Uibor Day, partly be-
cause of the heat and partly because so many young
men had to help their families gather fall crops.
School had to wait. But I think it was also partly
because it was too hot in the building; the only cool
air we enjoyed was v/hatever breeze came through
the open windows. But 1 don't remember it being
so bad. And that was in South Carolina where we
thought the air was dry when the humidity dropped
to 50%.
Realistically, it wasn't necessarily that we were
"used" to it. We simply didn't know any better. Sum-
mer was hot; winter was cold; we lived with it. Few
X people had air conditioning in their houses and
fewer in their cars.
But now, we know the comfort of central air
conditioning on a day eggs could be fried on the
hood of an automobile. We have experienced the
joy of having to put a blanket on the bed in July
rather than bumping the thermostat up a degree or
d two. Cost? Why, it's not that bad, not when it makes
us feel so good.
Fvery once in a while I hear some of my gen-
eration talking about the "good old days". If I am
part of tiie conversation, I quickly inject. "I'm living
my 'good old days' now." I don't want to go back to
a window fan in one room of the house.
Do you remember when we didn't "know any
better" than to live such ugly, sinful lives? We just
did it. Remember when someone told us there was
a better way? And when we investigated, we discov-
ered, sure enough, it was. 1 am aware that there is
"pleasure in sin" but I also know it is "only for a
season". Conversely, a relationship with Jesus Christ
lasts forever. And I can think of no reason to go back
to the "good old days" of sin. If you have started
that sometimes long road to backsliding, think about
one of those billboards that dotted the I )allas area a
few months ago. Maybe the one that said, "'You
think it's hot now?' - God."

What is
the value of a
life? If you
asked a drug-
gist to give
you the basic
ingredients
that make up
your body, he
could sell you all those ingredients for just a
few dollars. 'Die only thing you would need to
add is water, and plenty of it! Obviously, sci-
ence can't tell you what a life is worth.
What is the value of your life? Perhaps the
answer to that question could be determined
by answering another question. For what
would you die? Family? Country? A friend?
John says no greater love could be found. None
of us would give up our life for many causes.
Our life is worth more, a lot more, than most
causes.
An even more interesting question could
be asked. For what do men die? Not many die
for family, or friend. Many people who die, do
so for alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sex, careless-
ness, thrill, money, speed, or any number of
other things that aren't worth very much. Most
people who die prematurely do so for causes
that are very selfish. It is obvious that to many,
life is cheap and many die for things that seem
so foolish.
There is one other question to ponder. For
what did Christ die? Better still, for whom did
Christ die? Paul tells us in Romans 5 that Christ
died for us. Our values may be terribly dis-
torted, but Christ sees clearly. His gave His life
for us! He loved us enough to die for our salva-
tion! It is amazing the value He placed on a
life!
Thank you, Jesus, for loving us so much.
