NEXT SUNDAY IS FATHER’S DAY
We traditionally bring in strong Christian mamas to talk to us on Mother's Day, and the
same kind of daddies on Father's Day. This year, in Houston for the National Baptist
Congress of Christian Education which starts on Monday, June 19, we are bringing back
to the Wheeler pulpit Rev. Kenneth Whalum, Sr., pastor emeritus of Olivet Baptist
Church in Memphis, and the quintessential father, having reared three sons and seen all
of them go into the ministry.
’SUNDAY NITE LIVE’ BRINGS DYNAMIC CHAPLAIN
Last Sunday was National Cancer Awareness Day. It is significant that in the absence of
Rev. Cosby (who is preaching today in Phoenix, Arizona), our SNL preacher is one of the
chaplains at M. D. Anderson Hospital, Rev. Dr. Tonya Fields. Dr. Fields is a powerful
pulpiteer and a gifted counselor. Come out and hear this young woman, who is making
waves in the community of hospital clergy.
TOMORROW BEGINS VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
The term 'Vacation Bible School' generally denotes a summer program for children. Not
at Wheeler. VBS is an event for the entire family, with classes for all age groups. This
week, Monday through Friday, at 6:00 o'clock each evening, we will hold our 2000 VBS.
Brother Sam Tanksley is principal this year. It begins with dinner at 6:30, registration at
7:00, and then classes from age 6 through adulthood. Yes, the nursery will be open for
babies. See page 12 for details.
IT WAS NICE. IT WAS GOOD. IT WAS A BLAST!!
Like the gentle float-down of a parachute, we have not yet touched the ground. If you
were within five miles of Texas Southern University last Sunday morning, you heard the
praises. We had a knock-down, drag-out, pull-out-all-stops 38th birthday celebration.
Not a service—a celebration! Let's hear it for the 77 people who constituted the seven
committees! And let's hear it even more loudly for the stalwart Co-Chairs who recruited
and directed them, Deacon Gerald and Deaconess Sabrina Barnett! Whatever you want
to consider about that weekend—from the brilliantly produced play on Friday to the rich
Sunday School lesson to the magnificent staging to the incomparable music to the
dynamic message of Dr. Knight to the incredibly effective Lord's Supper to the fabulous
meal for Anniversary leadership—you have to use words like 'superlative,' 'excellent,' or
'anointed.' Tapes of the worship service will be available—see page 5. Tell Gerald and
Sabrina, and any member of the Anniversary committees, that you appreciated this
anniversary.
