PLAN TO GO PRAYING INTO 2001/THE THIRD MILLENNIUM
The debate still rages about whether the Millennium begins with 'O' or '1.' But there is no
argument about our need for God to lead us into and through it. Next Sunday night is
'Watch Night,' the New Year's Eve fellowship-worship that has us in prayer at midnight,
when the old year goes out, the new comes in. Plan to come to the church at 7:00 Sunday
evening, in casual clothing, bringing with you your family and friends. We will (1) eat
heartily, (2) play exuberantly, (3) laugh a lot, and (4) praise with our whole being and
pray from deep in our souls. Bring a dish (see Family Groups chart on page 9); bring an
item to be auctioned off to help some child or family; and bring an offering, which helps
to replenish a holiday-depleted Missions and Mercy fund. But above all, expect to face
2001 with more joy and confidence because whatever else you did in 2000, at midnight
December 31 you were in prayer with fellow-worshippers!
THE FOURTH CANDLE IS LIGHTED TODAY
We have been reflecting on the ancient observance of Advent, the four Sundays of sober
preparation for Christmas. Last week we were not able to include in the bulletin the daily
scriptures for that week. We displayed them on the video monitors, but some of you told
us you missed them as take-home items. So today we print them for the week of
December 24-30—and we are glad you count them valuable!
Fourth Week of Advent
Sunday - Isaiah 11:1-10
Monday - Zephaniah 3:14-17
Tuesday - Matthew 1:18-25
Wednesday - Luke 2:8-20
Church Offices and Grounds closed Monday, December 25th in observance of
Christmas Day. Bulletin deadline extended to Tuesday, December 2(>h, 12 noon.
CHRIST THE SAVIOR IS BORN
Our worship service today follows familiar patterns, but sparkles with a new holiday
touch. Mrs. Gladys Washington, English, speech, and drama professor (now retired from
Texas Southern University), is also the founder and president of the Cyrenians, a drama
group here at Wheeler. Mrs. Washington and the Cyrenians have taken this Christmas
Eve service and tweaked it into a 'Creative Christmas Worship Service.' It involves a
short original play she has written and directs today. Otherwise we sing, praise, pray,
reflect on God's word, and are challenged as always to be good and faithful servants of
the Christ Who came to redeem us all. Thank you, Mrs. Washington. Thank you,
Cyrenians!
