... From the pastor
BLACK AND PRECIOUS
i
And all who know that God orchestrated our slavery, our suffering, and our strength
must make sure that our children praise Him for it!
In a curious combination of the grace of God and the spiritual toughness of African
slaves, there was forged a unique character — the African American. He/she prays and
cusses. He/she hangs loose and hangs tough. He/she accepts insults and stereotypes and
still puts out excellence. He/she does super-dumb things and is incomparably brilliant.
This nation has been made infinitely richer by the presence and the contribution of Aunt
Hagar s children.
On the surface, there seems to be little difference in the circumstances of Americans of
different ancestry. Kids whose ancestors came from Europe or from Latin nations or
from Asian cultures or from Africa all have to take tough academic tests; they all are
subject to the laws of the land; and they all are represented among the successful and the
rich and the famous. But that is on the surface.
The kids with African ancestors had to overcome more than mediocre upbringing.
They are the only ones whose ancestors were enslaved by law, and whose bondage was
supported by the Constitution of the United States. So while they are capable of being
CEO of a major corporation, or to win a Grammy, an Oscar, or a Super Bowl ring, they
must never forget what their forebears went through to gain for them the privilege offirst
class citizenship.
Yesterday was the first day in a very special month. Yes, this month features
Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. But it is very special to some 40 million
Americans of African ancestry. February is Black History Month.
