side first with life preservers and
the boys handed us a tow line,"
Miss McDonald said. "Then they
came over the side. We all clung
to tow line.
"When we began drifting fast
with the tide, Philip decided to
swim to shore and get help."
The eight apparently had been
in the wuft-r for about three hours
while a Coast Guard flying bout
dropped flares and many small
boats scoured the area off West
River, Md.
The eight, all of the Washing-
ton area, included Mr. and Mrs.
Victor Fortwengler of Arlington,
Va.
What started as a Sunday plea-
sure cruise and almost ended in
disaster began yesterday morning
when the nine young persons left
Washington ana drove to Deaie
for a trip abourd the 32-foot
Kathleen V.
Wind freshened on Chesapeake
Bay in the afternoon and the wav-
es rose.
"A board seemed to have been
ripped loose by one particularly
high wave," Klosky reported. Then
four mop1 waves smashed it and
the boat just seemed to break up.
"However, all of us got life
preservers on. The other eight tied
themselves together, and I swam
for shore."
