center of the ruitjon was smother-
ed under a blanki-t of snow today.
Chicago was almost choked to
a halt by nine inches of snow—an
estimated lo.r.oo.ooo tons. The
weather bureau predicted it would
reach 12 inches be for* it stopped.
The snow ceased at one-foot at
St. Louis.
The storm—worst in history
ever to hit this section of the na-
tion so early in the fall—stretch-
ed from tin Great Lakes all the
way to Oklahoma.
Transportation of all sorts slow-
ed to a crawl or stopped complete-
ly
Th> death toil mounted, particu-
larly in traffic accidents motorists,
blinded by the snow an.I driving
wind, slipped and skidded on icy,
snow-blocked streets and high-
ways.
Fatalities since the start of the
cold wave climbed to 218, ISO of
these in traffic acculents.
Fasctories closed, power lines
snapped anil roofs collapsed under
the weight of the snow and hun-
dreds of cars were abandoned.

gainst Walker on embezzling char-
ges are now pending in Stephens
county on a change of venue.
Walker was arrested late yes-
terday by Deputy U. S. Marshal
Henry White. He appeared before
Commissioer Madden Hill aa hour
later fnd posted bond shortly after
it was set.
He told newsmen he felt indict-
ments in both cases were based on
incorrect facts. Since he believed
himself innocent of the Eastland
county charges, he said, the federal
charge also was groundless.
Ivan Irwin, Walker's attorney,
said the Eastland indictments had
"political implications.**
