Boy Kicks Up Hassle Over Deer
Making Seme Solons Look Queer
2=1
By HAKMAN W. NICHOLS
Lnited Press Staff Correspondent
WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 <U.P _
A barefoot Huy Scout named Glen
Tryon Allen has kicked up a hassle
on how we oujiht to go about sav-
ing key deer—the midget darlings
of the species.
Glen, aged 11, realised that the
key deer represented a symbol of
early America. The key deer was
the first to be seen by the White
Fathers which settled this country
and it is about to disappear. Trere
are only 40 left in Florida, and
Glen is concerned. So is the Nat-
ional Wildlife Federation.
_ The federation has dedicated
National Wildlife Week, March
Hi-22, to the key deer as the "sym-
bol of America's disappearing re-
sources."
The brown-haired Boy Scout,
took the key deer by the horns,
and sent right to the top. He kicked
in 11.98 of his paper delivering
.money to be sent it to President
Truman to start a fund to help
preserve the key deer. The presi-
dent turned the matter over to the
Fish and Wildlife Service of the
Department of Interior. '
Glen received a letter from the
F. and W. people. It said:
"\ou probably will be studying
soon the functions of the various
branches of the federal government
A
een
ess.
nu*

and will learn that one of
duties of the president is to si
into law, legislation which has been
passed by both houses of congress.
However, the president does nu£
have power to pass legislation hi
self, much as he would like
sometimes—as in your case.
"You might be able to do a se;
vice to the key deer and the sta'
of Florida by writing your repre
entative to the United States Conr
gress, and your senator, telling
them of your interest in the proteo-
tion of this nearly-extinct species
and urging the passage of protec-
tive legislation."
All of that gave Glen a pretty
busy bunch of weeks. He has learn-
ed how to write letters to congress-
men and senators and, it is suid,
now leads his class in same.
He says that he has received
replies, but they are, somehow, over
his head.
Some start out," "Dear Voter."
That doesn't make any sense to an
11-year-old who wants some law
to stop motorist and poachers frorfl
stalking the pretty little animals.
The key deer is the bantam-
weight of the white-tailed det*r
family. It is between 2<i and 29
inches high, and at the most only
:i8 inches long. The daddy weighs
between 2"> and .'{r> pounds, and is
about the size of a small Collie.
