Littlefield Sees Tougher Going At
Olympics For United States Runners
Our way of saying "Thank You'
for 20 years of progress
MORS FlAVO«, MW YAkUt
• With jKxfttbn,dfecdl
By LLOYD LARKABKK
United Press Sports Writer
AUSTIX, Tex., Feb. 14 IU.R'^~
One of the nation's t p track auth-
orities who wil 1 serve as an as-
sistant coach nf thi United States
Olympic Team, expects the Amer-
ican t ntr> t.i face tougher compe-
tition in the 19si2 classic than ever
before. •
Clyde Littlefield, track and field j
coach at th« Uiuver=itj of Texas'
since ISttn, says that countries1
taking part in the Olympic games
for the first time since World Wai
II will make th going tougher
this summer at Helsinki.
"We're going t>> hive stiffer
competition than ever," he point-
ed out, "with new countries com-
ing in like Russia."
Littlefield, originator of the
Texas Relays, first major outdoor
track competition in the United
States, expected the American en-
try's main strength to be .shown
in the sprints and relays.
He toured Europe last summer
as coach of an American track
team and was impressed with
England's middle distance run-
ners and sprinters, Germany's
weight men and middle distance
runners, and the distance men and
javelin throwers in the Scandina-
vian countries.
For Littlefield. 1U52 will be the
peak year of his 32-year couching
career. In addition to serving as
one of three assistant coaches to
Brutus Hamilton in shaping up
an Olympic track team, the Texas
iv I ays which he founded will mark
its 25th anniversary April 4-5.
A former three-sport letterman
in football, basketball and track,
Littlefield expects that some good
Olympic material will come out of
the Texas Relays.
For instance, a lad named Wal-
ter F. Davis of Texas A&M clear-
ed the high jump bar last year at
H feet. 1* inches. Littlefield, thumb-
ing through a record book, point-
ed out that event was won in the
194K Olympic games with a leap
of only (> feet, •> inches.
[(arrow Hooper of Texas A&M,
a shot put and discus artist, and
sprinters Charles Thomas and
Dean Smith, University of Texns
sophomores, alio are possibilities,
he said. Thomas touted Europe
last year with Littlefield.
However, the large bespectacled
coach added that "no champion has
ever been made that's been made
in a hurry. No one will make the
Olympic team who has just start-
ed. It takes time,"

FORT WORTH, Tex., Feb. 14
IU.R'—Forty-four amateur fighters
slug it out in the Will Rogers
Memorial Coliseum ring tonight in
the second card of the 1952 Texas
Golden Gloves tournament.
Fifty fighters appeared on last
night's opening program, with de-
fending champions Johnny O'Glee
of North Texas State and Eugene
Cuoper of Amarillo scoring im-
pressive victories.
O'Glee, a left-hander, won an
easy decision over James (Cot-
ton) Fowler of Abilene. Cooper
apparently in the best form of his
career, took only 45 second; to
knock out Fred Bilbo of San An-
gelo in their middleweight en«
counter.

least one more fight before trying
to win the title. His unimpressive
performance in stopping ancient
Lee Savoid convinced him of that.
Marciano was credited with a
seventh-round technical knockout
over 35 year old Savold of Engle-
wood, X. J., when the blood-
smeared veteran was unable to
continue as he sat in his corner
after the sixth session.
Manager Marty Weill said he
would like to have Marciano of
