O-4,
would like to asseAble here in Texas a representative co-mttee
from every part of the state and from every walk of life to be
a committee of safety in this battle against our mobilized enemy, can-
cer. The dead are piling up. The responsibility for relief must be
assumed by interested individuals. This is our chance. No other state
has a center of such scope. No other state has any more of the will to
see this through.
rhe director has pleaded, appeared before committees, been at the
c;i :zce of any group or individual who might help. He has succeeded
in raising seven and one-half million dollars, and is erecting a plant.
Costs of materials and labor have mounted as he has gone on with the
clan so that now, with the framework up, the scientists ready, and the
work of research to be done, he must start again to plead for close to
a million more to complete and equip the building. This is too much
for one man alone or a few men to carry. Shared by a thousand repre-
sentative men, making our state team an all inclusive unit, no one would
carry too heavy a load, yet each would share the total reward. Will
you give $1000 at this time to The University of Texas M. D. Anderson
Hospital for Cancer Research? Also, will you as a permanent member of
c c i.ittee of Texas men, give of your experience and encouragement?
ith the collective approval of you and the rest of the 1000,
Id I go to him and say, "Here is a group of 1000 men, any of whom
are ready to give of their counsel, experience and time when you need
it, all of whom wish to know, step by step, the successes and disap-
pointments in our state's research work on cancer. When financial
need arises, as it will in such an operation, you tell us what it is
s effort is of equal importance whether or not it is possible for
-rou to give financial support. Will you give me your decision as soon
possible? And may we 'ee in touch with you by letter and tele-
ns for a ding in this, our common cause, are equally welcome.
incerely,
James E. AndersonJEA: mrj
