SJr.i •• 1., Korea, * >ct. 1*
Th' R .-publv of South Korea
Army used to panic and flee in ar-
'y ^v.'ry tune it was hit by the
Communists.
But iio inoie.
Now the South Koivans haw a'
'i*ast in divisions in th*' L'nited
Nation- line, fiuhtiiiK like wild-
cats. with their own artillery and
tank and an esprit do corps the L*.
S. Marines might well envy.
In fact, the American leather-
necks have UOk Marines fighting
with th. m. And in recent months,
the South Koieans have held down
in praiseworthy fashion both the
western ami eastern anchors of
the I N line, plus a bij; chunk of
laud in between.
This is in marked contrast to a
year ago, when most Americun di-
visions shuddered and studied
their maps more diligently when
they learned they woulu have
ROKs on either flunk.
Twenty-two months of training
and roa(tiling have spelled the
difference between an Army that
fled in panic and seasoned soldiers
who live up to their new motto,
"st ay-fight."
The South Kor* aiis want to er-
ase the tni mory of th" days wh.-n
the KOK amy surrendered its
cap.!- I. Seoul, to the Communists
in three days at the start of the
war. And when iis collapse at the
eente." of the l'\ |!n in North-
west Korea in late 1950 Rave the
Chinese Communists their first
and bigtrest victory.
One t\ S. Marine, while KOK
Marines were holding the anchor
spot in th-r west recently, told me.
"don't worry about them KMC'ds
Korean Marine Corps. They'd have
done all rijfht ou the shores of
Tripoli if the.v had the training
they've cot now."

or of fireworks that Fred Stewart
was driving on I*. S. 80 near Min-
eola early Wednesday.

torist warned him ot the tue.
Stewart unhitched the trailer
