—and that they are blocked by
"selfish inter, sis" w hich put spec-
ial privilege above the public
good.
That argument suffers from one
little fault. It has been true for
many years that when public pow-
er proposals have been voted on by
the people, the vast majority of
them have been roundly d> feated.
Two typ'cal examples of this
long-term trend occurred recently.
In an Arkansas county, an act to
create a public utility district with
power to condemn tax-payititr hus-
in***-managed utilities was mas-
- icred by a four-to-one vote. In a
Washington state county two eom-
• •si.-sioners who <tan>paigned on the
platform, "Ke.p our tax-paying
electric company at work for us."
won by a two-to-one margin.
Various national polls have been
taken in an effort to find out if
th-■ people want the government to
take over the power business. The
verdict has always Wen no.
This being true, why h;is social-
ized power gone so far in this
country to the point/where it tic-
counts for something like lin per
cent of the total'? The answer is
simpler with few exceptions, it has
been btdldozed through by socialis-
tically-inelined political groups and
by government bureaus which
biivt grown so large and complex
as te he beyond the effective con-
trol of Congress. When the Ameri-
can people have a chance to regis-
ter tlii ii opinion of any socialistic
idea, the od.is are long that they
will turn thumbs down.

the nation's largest cash robbery.
The fedtuul grand jury which re-
cessed Friday was praised by
Judge Francis J. W. Ford before
he took from the foreman a sealed
manila envelope and withdrew to
his chambers.
"It must be gratifying to know
you've done justice to everyone,"
he said before he left the court-
room.
U. S. Attorney George F. Gar-

"faithful—a most unusual group of
