Razorbacks Win
Over Pittsburg
*FA Y ETTEVILLE, Ark., Jan. 30
<UJ?>—The Arkansas Razorbacks
gave their influenza-stricken coach
Glen Rose, a virtual shot in the
arm Thursday night by defeating
the Pittsburg, Kan., State Teachers
79 to 63.
Rose, who has been ill for several
days, couldn't make the game but
the Hogs responded well und£r As-
sistant Coach Mel McGaha.
The Razorbacks held a seven-
point edge by the end of the first
quarter and were never threatened
after that.
McGaha sent the Arkansas' sec-
ond string in during the sejond
quarter which ended 36 .to £9t in
favor of the Razorbacks. The first
string went back in at the start
of the second half.
Scoring honors for the evening
went to six-foot six-inch Walter
Kearnes, who tallied M7 points.
Teammate Gene Lambert was close

Chuck Davey "in, the seventh or
eighth round" at Chicago Stadium,
Feb. It.
Here at his training camp 25
miles from New York, Gaviluti um-
azed the boxing writers by making
the first knockout prediction of his
career. Then he went eagerly a-
bout the business of sharpening
his kayo weapon.
Working only with southpaw op-
ponents, the champ from Cuba

Lynn Farrell, with 13 points, was
high scorer for Pittsburg.
The victory gave Arkansas an

and flashy "bolo" right uppercuts.
But it was his smashing straight
right, used as a counter, that
knocked A1 Nianz of New York
and Stonewall Jackson of Wash-
ington back onto their heels,
'-.pprouching the peak of his
career at 27, the smiling Cuban
was so confident thut he said his
scheduled 15-round title defense a-
gainst college-grad Davey "Suttin-
ly won't go the distance." Figuring
more exactly, the Keed said he
would belt out Davey "in seven or
eight rounds."
Yes, the Cuban hawk had seen
Davey fight twice with Chico Vejar
on television. What was his re-
action ? "Oh, heem good boy,"
Gavilun said. "Heem poonch and
run—poonch and run. Maybe hard
to ketch. But I ho chase him.
Champion don't have to chase the
challenger."
there was some Question of whe-
ther he vrili be neie to plar ar.>*
more this season.
Coach F.. O. (Doc) Hayes said
Barnes' physician doesn't want to
risk him getting any more blows.
Barnes suffered a deep muscle
bruise and it has failed to respond
to treatment, Hayes said.
The Mustuugs have not win in
three loop starts since they emer-
ged'as the ore-season tournament
champions. The defending champ-
ion Frogs have been steadily-im-
proving and a victory Friday night
would push them into a second
place tie with Rice and Baylor,
with a 3-2 record.
Texas, leading the race with a
3-1 record, is idle this week.
