The senate passed the gold standard
bill by a vote of 5; to 34. including
pairs. The serrate final'y attached an
amendment to the bill in favor of inter-
national bimetallism whenever the other
nations can be induced to agree to
same. The bill having previously pass-
ed the house, now goes to a committee
of conference to settle the disagree-
ments of the two houses as to the sen-

Chailes E. Macrum. late U. S. consul
at Pretoria, (capital of the Boer Repub-
lic) arrived in Washington and made
scnnntion.il charges against the McKin-
ley administration; declaring tnat owing
to a secret alliance between the adminis-
tration and Great Britain he had been
forced to act as British consul after the
war opened, and that his mail was open-
ed and read by the British censor, in-
cluding communications tn and from
this government. These charges creat-
ed great indignation among members
of both houses of congress, who demand
that Great Britain be asked for an ex-
planation of such conduct, and unless
due apology be made, war be declared
ag.inst her. Resolutions were intro-
duced in both houses calling for an in-
vestigation of Macrum’s charges.

The Times is informed on reliable au-
thority that the management of the state
sugar farm on the Brazos river, which is
located mid way between Velasco and
Brazoria on the west side of the river,
has decided to extend the proposed rail-
road from the prazos to the Bernard
ri\ er, a distance of seven miles, and thus
connecting both streams which arc navi-
gable. T his would put the planters a-
long either stream tn easy and cheap
communication with the state sugar fac-
tory and refinery which will be located
on the banks of the Brazos. The Ber-
nard river is lined on both sides by some
of the best and most productive planta-
tions in the state. The state also con-
templates the erection of a very extensive
saw mill plant, which will be used in
getting out the timber for the railroad,
buildings, bridges, etc,, and also in saw-
ing up the ash timber for the manufac-
ture of furniture, implements, etc.
