PITTSBURGH - Engineers
are watching wtth tnterrst a new
method of' drying concrete that
niay save municlpailtiea— -runny—-
A huge vacuum pad' to placed Ml
the wet concrete and then air at
high pressure to driven through
the pad. The air forces, the water
out of the concrete, drying it so
that In five minutes a 200-pound
man can walk on it without mak-
ing an impression.
Engineers say ths strength of
the new-type concrete is increased
by M per cent. In four days, the
concrete to as dry s« the obi type
was in 29 days.
The pad, 4 feet by 3, was used
for ths first Ums on a bridge span-
ning ths Allegheny river. One half
the bridge was set in the standard
method, the other half with the
new type. The inch-thick mat with
22,000 pounds of pressure applied
against the concrete squeezes ap-
proximately one and one-half gal-
lons of water out of the mixture
with each application. ' J
Engineers on the project say the
strengthen*! concrete will reduce
costa of replacements materially if
no defects are found.
