' * From St. Paul, Texas, comes
news of the golden wedding an-
niversary celebration of Mr. and
Mrs. 'C. J. Torno, former Wash-
ington county residents, who
have been living in 'that little
community near Sinton since
1912. Both were reared in Wash-
ington county near Berlin. Mrs.
Torno ,was Caroline Hoffmann,
and the couple were ’married at
the old J. J. Hoffmann home
. < which burned down six weeks
ago. She has two brothers, R. V.
and Dan Hoffmann, living in
Brenham, and two sisters, Mrs.
Albert Lehmann-Sr. and Mrs. R.
A. Jahnke, also living here. Two
other sisters, Mrs. R. A. Menk
and Mrs. August Pflughaupt,
live in Houston. The couple have
29 grandchildren arid five great-
grandchildren. The golden wed-
ding celebration consisted Of a
basket supper and program at
the St. Paul school grounds with
, 300 friends and relatives present.

WASHINGTON. D. C„ Dec. 7—
Quarters which are usually "in the
know" here in Washington are
convinced that the 1940 session of
Congress will be brief, routine, and
uneventful. There will be no.new
reform legislation.. In fact, if any
new laws are ground out of the
legislative mill, they will be in the
direction of amending reform bills
already on the books notably the
.Wagner Labor Act. The spotlight
will be focused on defense appro-
priations and the budget, but John
Q. Citizen need not worry about
paying any new taxes next year.
There has been a lot of talk in
Administration circles
about economies that will result in
a slash in Che nation's deficit for
1940. This is sheer nonsense. There
is no hope of reducing expendi-
tures next year. The only question
