NE*?LL°T
It was the 10th of November,
the day before the tragedy. The
Australian summer had set in
with a spell of heat, and they were
all lolling down by the pool before
dinner all except Clarice.
BUI and Brenda Wheatley were
sitting in the feathery shade of
some tamarisks. Michael Rawson
was seated in a cane lounge. He
wu beading, but if Joyce moved
so much as an eyelid his eyes were
on her, hoping for an answering
took. Joyce didn't look at him,
though Rhe wag gasing at her
own small foot aa it rested on the
grass. *
Felix was gating at Eileen.
There wM a look of repoaeful calm
on her almost child-like face. Ei-
leen's beauty affected Felix
strangely- Just t® let his eyes rest
on her face made him feel that
there was seme meaning in the
hectic muddle that had been his
life up to now.
But there was Denise. Would
she let him go? He knew ' that,
she was watching Mm as he look-
ed at Eileen.
Abruptly, he stood up, but De-
nise's hand closed ronnd his ankle.
"Felix, don't go. Tmi’ve hardly
- »pok«n to me ah afternoon Why
' do you ioMt at EINen like that?"
“Oh, lay off," he said angrily.
Clarice took the children, Felix
and Joyce, to live with her. Dodd
spent most of his time on his big
cattle station up north. He didn't
much like the atmosphere at Rock-
water. He objected to Clarice's
extravagance and the Vay she in-
dulged the children. But after ten
years of mild protests, Dodd died4
and since then Clarice had had
everything her own way.. That had
been five years ago.
Lately, Felix hadn't said any-
thing more about working. He had
settled down to a summer of hard
drinking and sun bathing and love
making with Denise Deschamps,
wh® was staying at Rockwater.
At least, he had until Eileen
Foster also came for a visit.
Denise was half French. Her
mother had been a school friend of
Clarice’s who had married a rich
French merchant and gone to live
in Tndo-Chlna. When war began to
threaten up there, they had sent
Defiise to Sydney Denise was
beautiful and completely selfish,
so she fitted well into the Rock-
water circle.
Then came Eileen Foster. Her
people had the place up north next
to Dodd's and when she came
down for a summer by the sea, of
course Clarice said she must stay
at Rockwater. Felix thought she
was lovely and as different as a
girl could be from Denise and
