How To Help Your Child
To Personality Health
Your Child,” which is a popular
version of a part of the Fact
Finding Report on healthy per-
aonality development prepared for
the 1950 Mid-century White House
Conference on Children and Y'outh.
Experts in many children’s fields
participated and wrote scientific
papers. Their work Sas been trans-
lated into a popular version by Dr.
James L. Hymes, Jr., profeaaor
of education, George Peabody Col-
li;!* for Teachers in Nashville,
Tenn. A copy is yours for the ask-
ing, so long as the supply lasts,
says the Children’s Bureau.
Personality development is not
something that can be left to
doctors, the pamphlet aays. It ia
the business of parents—but not
of parents alone. Neighbors,
teachers, policemen, radio and
television performers, writers and
numerous other people help to
shape the child's personality.
At each stage of emotional
growth, says Hymes, each child
has one big hunger. It is up to us
to discover what it is and how
we can the road so that
he gets what he needs.
The infant, he states,
most of all "a feeling that his
world is okay ” Everything in the
world is new to him and every-
thing needs testing before he can
. feel sure
i “What are people like? Can he
I count on them? Are they reliable
| and friendly and nice?
"What ia the world like? Is it
I kind or does he have to fight it?
| Is it decent or does he have to
be careful, on his guard, watch-
I ing it every minute? It is a safe
! place or are there nasty surprises
i that sneak up?”
1 We all do this same kind of
wondering when things are new
says Hymes. The infant does not
think it out. But this is his great
concern
If he can feel the new is
trustworthy then he can relax.
He can give his energy to grow-
iqf? He does not have to be
jittery—either frightened all the
| time or fighting all the time.
