A cloud cover averted a threat-
ened freeze in the Lower Rio
Grande Valley,- sparing tender
vegetables. A drisale fell as the
mercury ragged to 37 and started
climbing at Brownsville.
Schools reopened and motor
travel returned to normal in sec-
tions crippled by heavy snow, al-
though some stretches of Mghway
were reported still dangerous with
ice overnight around San Antonio
and in Kimble, Menard, Schleicber
and Sutton counties.

Clouds disappeared over the
northwestern two-thirds of Texas,
and that part of the state was
promised sunshine and somewhat
warmer weather through Friday—
but another night of readings for a
hard freeze tonight, however, in
most of South Central and South-
east Texas, with readings down
to 24 degrees. Warming was due
in that area by Friday.
Weather Bureau observers ex-
pected temperatures of 20 to 34 de-
grees in the Lower Rio Grande
Valley, but they said this wouldn’t
be cold enough to harm vegetables
appreciably.
