This is the first year I tata
been privileged to see the Indi-

cousihs thinks

ing fallow all spring and sum-
mer, the grasses are making
bushels of seed, and the Indian
grass is amazing, with its six-
inch grain heads atop the five-
foot-six-inch stalks.

when I looked at the piles from
last winter, I found that every
leaf that could get to a spoon-
fid of dirt had taken root again.

centrated, and the roots had not
had a chance to grow very big
or to go very deep
. Our friend, Mr. Rife, has be-
gun to talk about the. migrat-
ing birds. I have seen no known
strangers, though I have no Way
to know whether the scissor
taila and the cardinals here this
week are the same as those
which were here last week.
Many of the birds, so the ex-
perts say, go milling about,
once they have raised their last
families, though not necessarily
taking off for winter homes
somewhere else. .
