CARROLLTON, Texas
(AP) — When Karen Forte
saw a time-worn, 108-year Bi-
ble in an antique shop, she
happily paid the *45 price for
the book It was the perfect
Christmas gift for her
children’s godparents, who
are antique buffs
But later, after discovering
the wealth of personal history
inside, in numerous written
accounts of the marriages
births and deaths of members
of a Nebraska family. she and
her husband were compelled
to try to find the descendants
of the original owners
“It’s neat and it’s so old."
Mrs. Forte said "It smells
old You walk by it. and you
can smell it.”
Her husband, Nick, added,
“From the first time I opened
it, I just felt there was
something there. 1 just got
that feeling walking by it one
day.”
The president’s comments
were prompted by presiden-
tial counselor Edwin Meese's
statement on Dec. 6 that he
has never seen any
“authoritative figures that
there are hungry children" in
America and that some peo-
ple go to soup lines “because
the food is free and that’s
easier than paying for it.”
WASHINGTON (AP) -
President Reagan's remarks
that the majority of soup kit-
chen clients are needy has
failed to quiet congressional
criticism that his administra-
tion is insensitive to the needs
of hungry Americans.
House Speaker Thomas P.
O’Neill Jr., D-Mass., said
Wednesday, “The president's
statement of concern does not

territory, and with 50,000
Syrians already in the coun-
try and several hundred thou-
sand massed across the
border, it’s just not
something that’s going to
happen.” said Glenn
"It’s becoming gradually a
Syrian-U.S confrontation
We’ve already had combat
with them. We re so far out-
numbered there it's only
fraught with the greatest kind
of hazard if we keep that
thing going." he added
Glenn said he is the can-
didate most interested in
peace
"I don’t need to tum on late
night television to find out
what it’s like to be m combat
I’ve been there through two
wars." the 23-year Marine
said. "No one is going to work
any harder for peace in this
country than I am out of that
background "
