The late Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, had a strong interest in American agriculture and sponsored or co-sponsored many pieces of legislation designed to benefit the farmer and enhance rural life in America. The Sam Rayburn Foundation, a non-profit organization is dedicated to perpetuating.Mr. Rayburn's desire to improve farm productivity and related food science and technology. The Foundation, in cooperation with the College of Sciences and Technology at East Texas State University at Commerce, has established the Sam Rayburn Research and Educational Center. Located in Bonham, the Center contains research laboratories, lecture rooms, and community meeting facilities. It is situated on the Rayburn homestead with approximately 100 acres available for experimental plots. The Sam Rayburn Foundation has recently established the Buster Cole Graduate Research Fellowship and provides a number of competitive Undergraduate Research Assistantships in Food Science and Technology for study at East Texas State University at Commerce and support of faculty projects at the Sam Rayburn Research and Educational Center at Bonham, Texas.
