Cemetery covering a charge of $100.00 against Mrs. Ray Block
for opening the grave in connection with the recent interment
of her late husband. She desired to liquidate this indebted-
ness but claimed the price was too high and that she could
not afford to pay this amount and asked for relief in this
matter. It was pointed out that this was the regular charge
made to non-members. Mr. Streusand referred same to the
Cemetery Committee for handling to conclusion.
Membership Committee: Mr. Sam Rosenberg, Chairman,
reported that nothing of importance had been done. He
reported a membership from Mrs. Schlosser, widow of the
late Mr. Schlosser, with annual dues of $21|..00.
The Secretary read a letter from Cantor A. Freidman
in which he made application for re-election as Cantor of this
Congregation, requesting a two-year contract with a stipulated
salary of $2,700.00 for the first year and $5,000.00 for the
second year. After some discussion it was the general opinion
that this matter be passed to the Ritual Committee for handling
and that the Secretary be instructed to advise Cantor Freidman
that the Ritual Committee had?planned tb mbbt with him sooner
but that due to certain developments now taking place this
conference with him had been delayed; and that the Ritual
Committee would disucss this matter with him during the next
few days. Mr. Rosen, Chairman of the Ritual Committee, stated
that his Committee was awaiting the outcome of other develop-
ments and that he would arrange to discuss this matter with
the Cantor. Mr. Kaplan called attention of the Board to the
early appraoch of the High Holidays and the consequent
necessity of an early understanding being arrived at with
Cantor Freidman. The Secretary was instructed to notify
Cantor Friedman of the status. In further discussing this
subject, Mr. Zuber wished to make it a point of record that
this Board does not favor giving a two-year contract, and
that although he thought very highly of Cantor Friedman and
the good work accomplished by him, he felt that the Cantor
should realize that this Congregation did not do things along
the lines mentioned. Some unfavorable talk had been incurred
and he asked that all members make an effort to stop this.
Mr. Kaplan made a motion that the Ritual Committee in meeting
with Cantor Freidman, be given full authority to conclude any
agreement with him for his term of office and at a salary
which the Congregation could afford to pay. Seconded by
Mr. J. B. Greenfield and carried.
