Mr. Streusand reported that the Ritual Committee
had under advisement and consideration the employment of
a cantor in a permanent capacity. At this time there was
nothing definite to report, and as this matter was left
in the hands of that Committee for a decision, it was
hoped that such Committee would be able to report something
concrete at the next regular meeting.
The main point of interest and particularly affecting
this Congregation, was the application for admission to
the Council by the newly formed Congregation Beth ^acob
and its ladies’ auxiliary or sisterhood, and its election
to representation. He dwelt on the procedure taken in
passing this and the objections raised by him, mainly on the
Mr. Kaplan gave a report in brief of the last
quarterly meeting of the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Houston. He reported on the activities of
the German-Jewish Refugee Organization and its request
that the Council approve the placing of a German-Jewish
refugee gamily in Houston, stating that the Community
would not be called upon to furnish any financial assistance
but to lend its moral support in seeing that this family
becomes re-habilitated^ The Council had given its approval
to this, and Messrs. Feld and Rauch had requested that
two additional families be sent, stating that they would
care for them, even with finances if necessary. The
Council had also given its approval to the placing of
German-Jewish children in Jewish homes in this City, which
children were not available for adoption but would be given
a good home until able to leave for college. This was
being handled by a committee and Jewish residents were
being contacted in this regard.
Heaters had been installed. There still remained one
more of these gas heaters, which would be installed as
soon as received. It was his recommendation that the
dome on the interior of the synagogue, be covered so as
to conserve the heat in the building. It was agreed
that this work be carried out.
Communications: The Secretary read a letter
of thanks and appreciation sent to Mr. Joe Weingarten
for the efforts expended by him in trying to consummate
an amalgamation of the Beth El and Adath Yeshurun Congre-
gations, which did not prove successful, also a reply
to this from Mr, Weingarten.
A communication was also read
from the Jewish Community Council of Houston requesting
that Congregation Adath leshurun appoint three represented
tives to the Council for the year 1958. In this connection
Mr. Stresuand appointed Mr. J, L. Zuber and re-appointed
Messrs. Ben Susholtz and Harry S. ^aplan.
