Sunday School Committee: Mr. Harry S. Kaplan, Vice-
chairman, reported that there was nothing of importance
to report other than the discussion by the Sunday School
Committee of a proposition to institute certain improve-
ments such as the provision of hymn books for use in
assemblies, etc. He hoped that the general tone of the
Sunday School would reflect this improvement at a later
date.
Membership Committee: Mr. Sam Rosenberg, Chairman,
had nothing of importance to report at this time.
Ritual Committee: ftr. M. R. Rosen, Chairman, stated
that he was unable to give a definite answer on the cantor
situation, which was the most important subject under
consideration by his Committee. He felt that the Board
should meet with this Committee and assist in bringing
this question to an end. He reported on a meeting held
by the Ritual Committee with Messrs. S. and H. Finger
and Harry Pulaski, relative to engaging Cantor R. Kaplan,
formerly of this Congregation, but at present with a
Dallas Congregation. These gentlemen were to have given
a definite answer by this time, but nothing had been heard
at the time of the meeting. It was his understanding
that this matter was being put off to some later date,
and he thought that the subject should now be discussed
and a decision on what should be done, reached. In the
discussion which followed, Mr. Sam Rosenberg mentioned
his conversation of that day with Mr. Pulaski, ■who
informed him that he would immediately wire Cantor Kaplan.
Mr. Ben Susholtz felt that no discussion was necessary.
Mr. Rosen, however, called attention to the fact that
negotiations had been conducted with Cantor Kaplan’s
connections here and our proposition had been submitted
on a satisfactory basis for Cantor Kaplan to either accept
to the interment of the late Mr. Messenger some few months
ago at which time the widow stated she desired that only
the Rabbi of Temple Beth El officiate at the burial. He
stated that she recently mentioned to him the forthcoming
unveiling matter. It was the concensus of opinion after
some discussion, that so long as the Rabbi of Adath Yeshurun
is in the City, and is able, he should participate and
have charge of all matters pertaining to the cemetery
so far as it refers to matters within his calling. Further
that no special privilege be granted to anyone, and that
the Messenger family be so notifed. It was also the opinion
of those present that Rabbi Tofield be advised that when
such matters are referred to him by members of the Community,
that those making the request be referred to the Cemetery
Committee for consideration. Mr. Streusand stated he would
consult with Rabbi Tofield, and would later instruct the
Secretary to handle by mail, if such was found to be necessary.
