Mrs. C. O. Gibson was hostess on
last Tuesday afternoon to the Tues-
day bridge club. The reception suite
where the tables were placed were
beautifully decorated in spring flow-
ers, roses and larkspurs intermingled
with ferns being used lavishly about
the rooms. Bridge was the diversion
and after the games lovely refresh-
ments were served at the game ta-
bles on trays centered with crystal
baskets of pink roses.

Johnson Saw No Good
Qualities in Merchant
Doctor Johnson was bitterly prej-
udiced against all merchants, says the
Market for Exchange. His famous
biographer, Boswell, once asked him
what was the reason for his anger at
the trader who achieved opulence, and
Johnson replied:
“Why, sir, the reason is, though 1 do
not undertake to prove that is a rea-
son, we see no qualities in trade that
should entitle such a man to superi-
ority. We are not angry at a soldier's
getting riches, because we see that he
possesses qualities which we have not.
If a man returns from battle, having
lost one hand, with the other full of
gold, we feel that he deserves the gold,
but we cannot think that a fellow sit-
ting all day at a desk is entitled to
get above us.”
“But,” replied Boswell, “may we not
suppose a merchant to be a man of an
enlarged mind, such as Addison in the
Spectator describes Sir Andrew Free-
port to have been?”
“Why, sir,” quoth Johnson, “we may
suppose any fictitious character. We
may suppose a philosophical day la-
borer, who is happy in reflecting that,
by his labor, he contributes to the fer-
tility of tiie earth and the support of
his fellow creatures, but we find no
such philosophical day laborer. A
merchant may, perhaps, be a man of
an enlarged mind, but there is nothing
in trade connected with a large mind.”
