“What can vie do to combat these

attack them? If vie find that the
teachings do not agree with the word
of God we must fight them. It is
the duty of every Christian to be a
defender of the faith. We must go to

people. It is our only way to combat
the powers of evil that are at work in.
the world against Christianity.

Forerunners of the coming Methodist
conference which opens its seventy-
first annual session here on Wednesday,
Revs. Ellis Smith presiding elder of
the Houston district, and E. L. Shettles,
presiding elder of the Marlin district,
spent Sunday in Galveston and both
preached at the city, Methodist church-
es, Rev. Shettles at the First church
and Rev. Smith at West End church
in the morning, and both of them
changing pulpits in the evening. Rev.
Shettles’ first pastoral charge was West
End church and he has always held in
hi? heart a warm place for that con-
gregation.
Today, the delegates to th'e confer-
ence will begin to arrive, those to come
lyjll members of committees who have
work to do before the real session of
the conference begins. The examina-
tions of young ministers will be held
Tuesday at the First Methodist church.
There are about 40 applicants from all
parts of the conference.
In addition to the other prominent
Methodists who will be in attendance
on the conference, it has been learned
that Bishop E. D. Mouzon will take
this occasion for visiting Galveston.
Bishop Mouzon many years ago was
pastor of what was then St. James’
church on 14th and Postoffice streets
and he is still fondly remembered by a
number of people who were at the time
members of his congregation. Mr.
Mouzon was elected a bishop at the
general conference held last May in
Asheville, N. C., and comes to this
conference merely as a visitor, al-
though,as an act of courtesy, he may
be asked to preside over the confer-
ence some time during its life.
Rev. Ellis Smith, who spent yester-
day in the city and held the fourth
quarterly conferences of the two local
churches, will spend today in Houston
winding up the business of his district
and will return here by Wednesday to
'take part in the conference.
Rev. W. J. Johnson, pastor of the
First Methodist church, expects that
by night there will be 100 delegates
in the city and that by tomorrow every
train will bring in those who are to
take part in the proceedings of the big
gathering. The business sessions of
the conference will begin promptly at
9 o’clock Wednesday morning and last
for three hours. The afternoons will
be given over to the meetings of com-
mittees and to other matters not to
come directly before the conference.
There will probably be one exception
ti^ this, and that on Saturday there
may be held a business session of the
conference. Each evening there will
be religious services conducted by some
member of the conference and on next
Sunday the visiting preachers will oc-
cupy the pulpits of all the city
churches.
There >is still a shortage of homes in
which to place the-preachers and dele-
gates and those who have accommoda-
tions and are willing to entertain one
or more of the visitors should com-
municate with Rev. W. J, Johnson at
once. '
Mr. L. J. Lester of Tyler, treasurer
of the Texas conference, has issued
the following notice to the preachers
of the Texas conference:
“Those of you having business with
the church treasurer will please call
at the Galveston National bank and
inake settlements as promptly as pos-
sible, to the end that the business of
the conference will not
longer than necessary.”

Large Crowd Attends Event in Har-
mony Club Hall.
One of the most enjoyable dances
and entertainments of the season was
given by Wenonah council No. 3, de-
gree of Pocahontas, Thursday in Har-
mony Club hall. The dance was at-
tended by over 500 people, and the
program of music played by the Harp-
ers’ orchestra lasted until after the
midnight hour.
A feature of the evening was the
drill by the members or the degree
team of Wenonah council, which was
given with electrical effects, the mem-
bers of the team being costumed in
appropriate manner. The way the la-
'dies went through the difficult and
intricate figures showed careful train-
ing and reflected great credit on the
members and t^am captain, Mr. Chas.
Pinkinberg. The members taking part
in the drill were as follows:

the Scriptures when there should be
a falling away from the faith, and the
fact that this falling away was so ev-

ing that it could be looked for. He
spoke of numerous cults that have
arisen in recent years, among them
being Christian Science, Spiritualism,
New Thought, Advanced Christianitl,
Milennial Dawn, Theosophy and oth-
ers. These, he declared, are not Chris-
tian, but are anti-Christian, the agen-
cies through which Satan is working
to lead men away from the true
faith as given to the saints through
the inspired word.
The fact that these faiths have a
big following which is constantly in-
creasing is not evidence, he declared,
that they are founded upon Christian-

"”e two reasons, he continued, why
these creeds are flourishing and reach-

The first is that there is a widespread

I teachings as presented to the world.

connection the speaker put the stamp
of disapproval upon the popular re-
vival, declaring that its purpose is to
get new members for the church in
which it is held, and he expressed the
hope that the day is over for revivals
of the character so frequently con-
ducted.
Further discussing the teachings of
the new . creeds that - have sprung up
in recent years in fulfillment of the
prophecies of the Bible, he declared
that all are the same—have the same
mask. None teach that man is to be
eternally punished if he rejects the
word of God, and all deny the exist-
ence of sin. Spiritualism, he declared,
asserts that all are happy ,on the other
side, and the millennial dawn is the
amalgamation of all the Satanic teach-
ings.

clared. They have existed in one form

Saturday evening Dr. A. C. Gaebelein
brought to a close the Bible confer-
ence he had been' holding for a week
at the First Presbyterian church. His
address was from the last chapters of
the book of Daniel, and in the brief
space of time at his command the
speaker necessarily made his com-
ments short.
“The greater part of tho
chapter of Daniel is already fulfilled,’’
said the speaker, “and has been veri-
fied in history made 400 years later.
“The vile person referred to in the
twenty-first verse is Antiochus Epiph-
anes, who is the first little horn. He
typifies another who is to come in the
time of the end. Three great figures
are to appear on the scene in the -time
of the end: 1. The little horn spoken
of in the seventh chapter, the one who
brings together the Roman empire
once more. This king will be a gen-
tile. 2. Antiochus Epiphanes, the king
from the north This king will proba-
bly spring from the Turkish empire,
possibly a czar of Russia. 3. The anti-
christ, who is the devil incarnate, call-
ed in the Old Testament the false
The antichrist will be a Jevz.
Here we have the Satanic trinity. The
little horn and the antichrist will
work together. The end of these wick-
ed leaders comes when Christ comes.
“The twelfth chapter, the time of
trouble, is the time of the great trib-
ulation, the same as is mentioned in
Matthew xxiv. We are aided in inter-
preting Daniel all the way through by
Revelations: The great tribulation
will last three and one-half years. The
Jews will be delivered.
Daniel, only the wise
stand the Scripture
our Bible for light,
the abomination at
three and one-half years
the time of the end.
“The last vision refers to those lat-
ter times just before the king comes
and sets up his kingdom.”
Dr. Gaebelein preached at the First
Baptist church both morning and
evening yesterday. His morning*theme
was based on the last seven verses of
the Bible, and his evening sermon was
based on the parable of the great sup-
per. Large congregations heard both
sermons.
At 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon Dr.
Gaebelein spoke in Rosenberg hall at
the Y. M. C. A. on “Modern Delusions:
Why They Flourish, and How to Deal
with Them’ The auditorium was fill-
ed and several were compelled to go
into, the gallery. The address was
listened to with earnest attention.
Dr. Gaebelein took for his text the
third verse of the Episle of Jude: “Be-
loved, whe<« I gave all diligence to
write unto you of the common salva-
tion it was needful for me to write
unto you and exhort you that ye
should earnestly contend for the faith
which was once delivered unto the
saints.”
Launching out upon his subject, the
speaker explained that the faith spo-

Do Not Try to Drive and Force It to
Work When It Is Not Able or You
Will Suffer All the More.
You can not treat your stomach as
some men treat a balky horse; force,
drive or even starve it into doing work
at which it rebels. The stomach is a
patient and faithful servant and will
stand much abuse and ill-treatment be-
fore it “balks,” but when it does you
had better go slow with it and not at-
tempt to make it work. Some people
have the mistaken idea that they can
make their stomachs work by starving,
themselves. They might cure the
stomach that way, but it would take
so long that they would have no use
for a stomach when they got through.
The sensible way out of the difficulty
is to let the stomach rest if it wants to
and employ a substitute to do its work.
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets will do
the work of your stomach for you and
digest your food just as your stomach
used to when it was well. You can
prove this by putting your food in a
glass jar with one o- the tablets and
sufficient water and you will see the
food digested in just the same time as
the digestive fluids of the stomach
would do It. That will satisfy your
mind. Now, to satisfy both your mind
and body take one of Stuart’s Dys-
pepsia Tablets after eating—eat all
and what you want—and you will feel
in your mind that your food is being
digested because you will feel no dis-
turbance or weight in your stomach;
in fact, you will forget all about hav-
ing a stomach, just as you did when
you were a healthy boy or girl.
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets act in a
natural way because they contain only
the natural elements of the gastric
juices and other digestive fluids of the
stomach. It makes no difference what
condition the stomach is in, they go
right ahead of their own accord and
do their work. They know their busi-
ness and surrounding conditions do not
influence them in the least. They thus
relieve the weak stomach of all its
burdens and give it its much-needed
rest and permit it to become strong
and healthy.
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets are for
sale by all druggists at 50 cents a box.
They are so well qnown and their
popularity is so great that a druggist
would as soon think of being out of
alcohol or quinine as of them. In fact,
physicians are prescribing them all
over the land, and ix your own doctor
is real honest with you, he will tell
you frankly that there is nothing on
earth so' good for dyspepsia as Stuart’s
Dyspepsia Tablets.

With the loss of health one’s income
is liable to shrink, if not entirely
dwindle away.
When a young lady has to make her
own living, good health is her best
asset.
“I am alone in the world,” writes a

about two years ago through close ap-
plication to work and a boarding-house

got so bad off it was almost impossible
for me to stay in the office a half day
at a time.
“A friend suggested to me the idea
of trying Grape-Nuts food, which I did,
