AMERICAN AMBASSADOR
REJECTS RED CHARGE
NEW YORK, Aug. 13. (I’D—
The American ambassador to
Russia has categorically denied j
charges that this government was!(
involved '-in the attempts of two
Soviet schoolteachers to remain [ ■
in the United States. A State De- 1
partment spokesman in Washing-
ton says Ambassador Walter
Bedell Smith's denial was given
orally to Soviet Minister Molotov
in Moscow yesterday. It was made
after Molotov protested against
what he galled the “connivance”
of American authorities in the
case of the two schoolteachers.
The pair are Mikhail Samarin
anti Mrs. Oksana Kosentina. Sa-
marin-testified voluntarily before
a house committee yesterday arid-
said he was afraid he and his
wife would be shot or sent to a
ebneentration camp for life If they
returned to Russia. A little later,
-Mrs. KcjUmtlna leaped to freedom
from the third floor of the Rus-1

critically. American diplomatic of-1

refutation of Soviet charges thnt|
she and Samarin had been kid-'
