DETROIT, Dec. 20. (UP)—One of
the "Scotsboro boys”, Haywood
Patterson, is under arrest in De-
troit. Witnesses today will trywto
determine whether he is the man
who killed 27-year-old Willie
MUchell in a barroom fight last
Saturday.
Patterson was given a 75-year
prison sentence in Alabama 11
years ago. He was sentenced with
eight other negroes for an al-
leged assault on two white
women near Scotsboro, Alabama,
in 1931. Patterson escaped from
an Alabama prison farm in 1948
and made his way to Michigan.
He won permanent freedom when
Michigan Governor Mennen Wil-
liams refused to extradite him to
Alabama last July.
