much of it as you can afford to
tell—at the lowest possible level
If your hand is barely strong
enough for an opening bid, you
have no* problem with a two-
suiter if the suits are touching,
such as both majors, or hearts
and diamonds, or both minors;
the higher suit is the right first
bid, so you may show the lower
next. Or, regardless of strength,
if the suits are of equal length,
then the higher is the better bid,
since naming them in reverse
order will make your partner
think the ffrst is longer.

first sequence. When he later bid
the spades. North thought he was
showing probably five hearts and
only four spades So North prop-
erly put the contract into the suit

the heart A set up West’s J to
give the defenders seven tricks.
North pointed out that, if South
had started with 1-Spade, the
calling would have gone as in the
second sequence. South would
have wound up in a contract one
trick lower, as well as one which
fortunately w.o u 1 d have played
better, even against good defense.
The 2-Spades contract could have
been made The fact that the
stronger suit was on the side, in- I
