As I said, we ariived In Manilla on
the first of Octob'*r. We left Manila
on the third tor Laoag. I Incas Norte,
where I am stationed at the present
time. There were only tour young
men teachers on the ship, and two of
Us were stationed at this place. We
are on the north end of the Island
of Louzon* The trip up through the
island was wonderful. W” traveled
about 250 miles by rail, and about
90 mil< by automobile. The road
was piked all the way. It being built
by the Spaniards, hundreds of years
ago. f was surprised to find such a
fine road in the Islands, especially
so lar out. On our way we passed
through the rice fields, cocoanut
groves, some pineapple fields and al)
the native fruits, many of which I
have not learned the names.
Laoag is a city of about forty
thousand people. But I can say that
It lik*’s all from being an American
city. There are twelve American
teachers here and only twenty-five
Americans in the city But we have
a very nice American hospital here
under the direction of sane Mission-
ary Board.
The High School here is the third
largest In the Islands. There are
five large High school buildings here,
accommodating about four thousand
students* I hav** only taught
flays, but think that 1 will like my
work tine. In fact I like it already.
The Phillippines certainly are eager
to learn. And they have the highest
respect for the American teachers, in 1
fact they respect them too much, for
the boys all take off their hats to us
when they me*’t us on the street
causing us to have to speak to them.
I do not know much about the school
as yet, but will be able to tell you
more about them later.
Living conditions are good here
Everything is awfully cheap, only
about one hall of expensive as in the
States. We buy eggs for fifteen cents
per dozen a chicken for thirty cents. (
