lost his life in his vision of ___
world and he who so loses his life
shall save it.
Yet there was nothing doubtful in
his love, nothing patronizing, noth-
ing exacting. Zealous in commen-
dation, stern in reproof, he judged
others in the light of his own fierce
energy-. Industrious, tireless, ever
alert, he never waited for inspira-
tions, he made them. Prudent,
sagacious, sensible, keen, he mingled
talents and capacity with terser wis-
dom and undestanding. He conse-
crated every enegy to the welfare of
his boys and girls with a magnanim-
ity of heart that sought and craved
no ostentation—that quiet, gentle
charity which looks for no approba-
tion and sheds its brightest luster
like the flower “born to blush un-
seen.’’
We do not ask if he accomplished
all that he set out to do, it is enough
that he played the game of life and
played square. When a man has
done all that he can he has not lived
in vain. A noble impulse is
fruitless, a virtuous deed will 1
perish, a generous action does
die. Mr. .Mayo met with what
call success-sucei-s- as he desired
it. Not in the form of fame or
wealth but the success of a life
spent in helping mankind to be bet-
ter and more fit.
It is sometimes thought that the
only heroes who have their names
remembered by their fellow country-
men are those whose eminence con-
sists of bravery, wealth or office,
hut go among the jostling crowds,
the busy strife and hastening feet
of the world’s common men and
there is the man whom we have nev-
er known before, as noble as the
noblest born, as brave as any hero
who was ever sung, penned, dr_ pic-
tures. Mr. Mayo was such a rT.ltV’
Long, toils and hard compose the
story, of his life but he pressed
from the grapes of adversity the
wine of a useful life and this old
world is a better world, a more
cheerful and sympathetic world, be-
cause of the lovable and loving
presence in it of W. L. .Mayo.
