The Tribune would suggest public
meetings for the discussion of the
bond election for good roads. A Ims-
iness league banquet, to which all the
farmers should be Invited, would
prove very valuable if the main topic
of discussion were the good roads
question. We daresay that there are
plenty of mi'ii in Huy City able to
handle tlie question Intelligently ami
convincingly There is nothing like

We had an occasion to go to Chal-

see the rapid development of the coun-

Those who have not traveled that road

our rural districts are coming to the

Nearly all of the very wealthy coun-

the Bay City Tribune
Tiler* Is a great progress In Texas
along this line. When the law was
first passed authorizing the counties
to vote a tax for public road improve-
ment, Hu* writer as editor of the Dal-
las Times Herald advocated an elec-
tion in Dallas county to take advan-
tage of the law, but to the surprise of
many, the fiirmers who were to b«*
most directly fviiefitted, were strongly
and alnioHt solidly opposed to the
proposition, so much so that It was not
even deemed worth while to have an
election But that was 22 yen is ago.
Ten years later the ’ bond bugaboo’’
lost some of its terrors, some of the
progt.'Hsivc farmers favored the prop-
osition, and with the overwhelming
vote of the cit) where most of the tax
was paid, it carried, and half a mil-
lion dollars of bonds wi re issued and
'■xpemied on four splendid roads from
the county seat to the county lines,
north, east, west and south, with a few-
laterals Of course, there were the
usual jealousies and complaints be-
r-ause the first toads constructed could
not go by every (aim. But the ol>,lec-
tors soon realized that it whs worth
v title to have the advantage of half
to three-fourths the distance to mar-
ket over smooth roads, rather than
mud all of the wav. and, too. that
there must be trunk or main roads be-
fore there can be lateralH. The re-
sult was a much larger vote for the
