Every little while some unfortun-
late comes to the city and exhibits his
deformity to arouse the sympathy of
your generosity, and you respond ac-
cording to your inclination. Now it
is not because I am less inclined to
do charity and relieve suffering that
prompts me to write this, but it is be-
cause these people travel about and,
for all we know, are unworthy of
charity, and yon only encourage beg-
garism. Don’t you think that ought
to bo discouraged, and that each
county ought to take care of its de-
seserving poor, and provide a place
for its crippled: The real deserving

Every time I come to town
I have to lift an old gate aroun’;
It makes no difference if t he fence is down
I gotta keep draggin’ that gate aroun’.
Well, the next time I go to town
I’m going to take a'little walk'aroun*
An’ see that gate won’t sag down—
I’m gonna quit kickin’ old gates aroun’.

the threshold of another Lent, let me | because the days are evil
offer you a few affectionate counsels
regarding its observance.
Set a higher standard for yourselves,
and be more stern amt severe in self-
judgment ami more charitable and
forgiving in judging others.
Bo often quiet and alone, and use
this solitude of Spiritual profit in con-
scious realization of the presence of
God. Many opportunities will be found
during the season for rest and medi-
tation in the church outside of ser-
vice time.
Why not make a point for reading,
above al), the Bible Study this and
some of the literature that makes it
a living book. Read the Scriptures
daily according to the lectionary in
the Prayer Book.
Learn and practice the divine art
of secret prayer.
Prepare for Holy Communion by
self-examination and meditation.
Pray for us, your rector, your bish-
op, and the other clergy.
Such a Lent may indeed be unnatur-
al, but It will be supernalural--that
is to say, spiritual and devout, and
this is surely' the right idea of Lent.
We are passing through life only once,
