Austin, Texas, March 1’1. investi-
gation made by Commissioner of Agri-
culture Ed 11. Kone shows that tlie re-
cent freezing weather has resulted in
great damage to fruit trees in Texas.
[Examination made in Austin since the
■cold spell shows that 90 per cent of
tli<> peach blossoms were killed by (be
low temperature. All fruits in full
bloom in a local nursery were killed.
I Information lias come to the Depart-
^|inent of Agriculture that 50 per cent
• of the peacli crop in Smith county is
* 'killed.
’ Reports received by me of damage
to fruit by the recent, freeze are more
serious than 1

Tlie Priscilla ineeiing of Wednesda.'

day and the roads were in a terrible
fix. However, four cars started out
to Chalmers loaded to tlie brim. Some
little distance out they struck soft
mud and tlie curs "skidded" s<> much
that they couldn't go on lia dto re-
turn, unload and clean up .
Now, at the other end of the road
set Mrs. Fell, hostess of tile day, with
Mrs. Brown, her mother, and some
friends at Chalmers who could "foot"
it over.
Fate was just against the Bay City
crowd, for if the}' could have nimle it
out, such a time as was awaiting
them. Tlie afternoon would have
been spent in a first and second part.
The first was planned to cidebrate in
a very pleasant way St. Patrick's day.

lowed by a regular supper, beginning
with fried chicken and ending after

\i .in • ur Saturday moi
there will occur a total eclipse of the
moon Howeser, only people living
in restircted sections of the I ntted
States will be able lo olisci've th<‘ pile
nomenon at its best. The moon will
enter tlie shadow at 1:13 a. m, cen-
tral time, and at 5.11
eclipse will be complete,
(he totality of tile otiseurnti'>"
Come just as the moon sets.
One of the interesting features of
Illis eclipse Is the tact that tile moon
will be almost exactly on the celes-
tial eipiiilot at the time of the occur-
rence. The diameter of tlie eartli's
shadow when tin1 moon traverses it
Saturday .which will appear conical
in shupe, is placed at 957,000 miles.
I'lie mean distance of the moon from
the earth is 239,00(1 miles, which, sul>
traded form Hie length of the eartli's
shadow, 957,000 miles, Indkate (hat
the shadow extends 619,000 miles be-
yond tin' moon.
Although in total eclipse, the moon
still 'JU be visible. The phenome-
non of Its visibility through the eiitih s
shadow is accounted for by tlie light
refracted from the atmosphere of the
earth at the sunrise and sunset line
Tills refracted light gives the moon
that peculiar coppery color noted at
times of eclipsi'.
Because of tile uiiseauoualde hour Of
its occurrence, is is probable that
comparatively few in Bay City will set
their alarm clocks for 1 o'clock Satur-
day morning in order to observe tlie
beauties of tlie moon passing through
the earth 'shadow; but the word of
astronomers for it the sight will be
well worth the loss of an hours seepl.
