The Alcove is arranging a novelty
in tlie way of a Christmas tree which
will no doubt become very popular
with the children and gladden the
hearts of many of them.
Mr. Eidman has mounted a very
large one in the Alcove parlors and
is now at work "dressing it up" for
Christmas week. The incandescents,
which are of variegated colors, illum-
inate tlie tree and make it very pretty
to look at, while the goodies which
will be placed on it are calculated to
make many a little one’s mouth water
and eyes sparkle.

WELL ARRANGED NOVELTY.
Luther Massey and Ed. Chapman, of
Markham, spent yesterday In Bay
City.
Anyone who has served on an or-
ganized charity committee knows that
the best results are only obtained by
systematic work. There are three
essentails, namely: First, thorough
organization; second, a complete
knowledge of the cases to be re-
lieved; third, what to give.
It has come to the knowledge of
The Tribune that there are a number
of indigent cases in Bay City, who,
unless they become the object of our
attentions and are given substantial
relief, will be denied even the small-
est portion of the joys of tlie other-
wise gladsome Christmas season.
They may be the objects of our ten-
der solicitude and we may comment
in touching platitudes on their desti-
tute condition, but such an attitude
will not do them any good or us eith-
er, unless we apply the rules of a
practical philanthropy in these cases
by organizing our forces, seeking out
the cases of the worthy poor and be-
stowing our gifts where they are most
needed. t iwil
The Tribune rejoices in the fact
that a systematic effort is now being
made to dispense this charity and that
a number of blg-souled Bay City men
and women have banded themselves
together for the sole object of reliev-
ing necessitous cases within the next
week. Elsewhere in this paper today
is a notice in which a number of
good ladies of the town have issued
an appeal to the charitably inclined
who may wish to co-operate In this
movement. The notice speaks for It-
self and The Tribune trusts it will
be heeded by all persons who have
more of this world’s goods than they
need.
Not a poor child in Bay City should
be neglected this Christmas, even if
wc have to' make a personal sacrifice With "The Prodigal Son” here Christ-
fn order to relieve them. mas Day.
These men made
most excellent talks and made very (
favorable Impressions on the institute.
' Monday evening tlie girls of the do-
, inestic science department of the Bay
City school served the County Insti-
tute with cake and hot chocolate, fol-
I lowing tills the school gave a recep-
tion to tlie Institute in the study hall.
The High School Band played sevenl
musical numbers; the High School
Glee Clubs sang and altogether the
program was highly pleasing to the
Institute. Among the principal fea-
tures of the Thursday program were
papers by Miss Lottie Ware and Prof
Gray, the latter being the paper rend
by Mr. Gray before the Bay City
Teachers’ Institute Prof Gray was
especially requested to read the paper,
nnd it was highly pleasing to the mom-:
hers of the institute. This is Mr.
Gray’s first institute since he became
county superintendent and ho hns
made a good impression on the teach-
ers of the institute. He, with all of
his teachers, lias determined to make
a decided progress in the county
schools this year. Prof. A. Wallace of
Sweeny was a visitor at the Institute
Wednesday- and made one of the most,
impressive little talks that has been
made during the week. About fifty
teachers are in attendance. A full re-
port of the institute will be given at
tlie close.
If any person in town knows of a
sick or needy person will do a kind-
ness if they will report tlie case to the
school house. Tlie children have a
collection of clothing and a small cash
fund to help these persons, The fol-
lowing ladies compose a committee to
investigate the eases and will say |
whether they need help or not: Mrs.
Amos Lee, Mrs. Ed. Kilbride, Mrs. Dr.
Scott, Mrs. Ducroux, Mrs. Wright. The
faculty committee is composed of A.
A. Aldrich, Misses Maytnle Schaedel,
and Mary H. C. Buell. Alt contribu-

J. W. Gaines December 29th at 3:30
o’clock.
This chapter has heen very active
the past year as well as all previous
years. Some of the things we have
done are as follows: Made donation
