Fort Worth. Texas, Aug. 21.—Fol-

ranks as developed by the Ferguson-
Bailey faction, republican leaders im
mediately called a conference for the
purpose of discussing the situation
and taking advantage of the oppor-
portunity presented by the family
quarrels among the opposing party.
It was decided to call a meeting of
republicans at an early date and de-
cide on a plan of procedure which
wl lihe calculated tn advance the in-

At the headquarters of the republi-

Life is a mirror which reflect what
we arc, but fails to tell why we hap-
pen to lie what we are physically.
Often a glimpse at the mother, her
home and habits of life will give a
true reflection of why the baby's phys-
ical condition is below normal.
Twenty-five per cent of all deaths
occur before the fifth year of life. In
the year 1918, returns representing
only 70 per cent of the total popula-
tion of the United States showed more
than 75.000 deaths of infants und<r
ne month of age. These children did
not die from want of mother love, lint
•i great many died because their moth-
ers did not know how to care for
'hem. or were unable, on account of
sickness, poverty or ignorance, to
give them tho proper nourishment
and attention.
The life, health and physical devel-
opment of the child is so dependent
upon the condition of the mother that
proper attention cannot be given this
phase of child life without beginning
tbo work during the pre-natal period
and seeing that tho mother Is sup-
plied with tho necessaries of life for
— this period that her health is prop-

An infant deprived of the mother's
milk, to which the partially developed
digestive system is adapted, must he
ft d with the greatest care and intel-
ligence. There is nothing "Just as
good" as mother's milk.
Breast Feeding Depends l.nrgely on
the (lire the Mother Takes of
Herself.
Before birth - Good food and care
during pregnancy. Skilled assistance
at confinement. Rest and good cart
during lying-in period.
After birth. — Ample,
diet and plenty of liquids.
Sufficient sleep and
airing, gradually in-
creased exercise, and recreation.
All good food can be turned into
milk, but milk In the mother's diet is
the best milk producer.
Breast Milk Can Be Modified to Sult
the Baby.
Mother’s milk if scanty and inade-
quate. even on plenty of food and
drink should lie conserved and sup-
plemented by bottle feeding. Some
breast milk is much better than none
and should be jealously guarded dur-
ing the first six months of an Infant’s
life. The danger period comes in the
early months. Artificially-fed infants
die during the first year of life in n
far greater proportion than those that
are breast-fed for at
six months.
if breast milk does not agree with
the baby, do not wean him until you
have tried:
Improving the quantity of the milk
by attention to the mother’s diet, in-
take of liquids, and details
daily life.
Feeding the baby at regular four-
hour intervals.
Shortening the
feedings.
if breast milk is scanty, giving some
diluted cow's milk after one or more
feedings.
Give one-half to one ounce of boiled
water before each nursing.
If breast milk is supplemented by
I'ottle milk it is better to give both
at one feeding rather than alternate
the two. The breast is apt to dry up
if tlie child does not nurse at least
every four hours.
II hen to IIwin the Baby.
Weaning should be gradual and
should lie completed by the end of the
first year. Therefore when Hie breast
milk begins to fail, or by the ninth
month in any case, begin part bottle
feeding
Breast milk is best for liahies.
