Roger Smith, delivered the aft-
ernoon sermon “What Christ Can
Do For Men.”

various senior and junior col-
leges of the country and by the

In devoting a day to the study
of Charles Dickens, the Thursday
Club on last Thursday afternoon,
December 7, also honored Mrs.
W. R. Lamb of Bowie, who was
born in England and in her child-
hood, saw Charles Di^kei^s.
This lovely affair which fea-
tured a strictly English style tea
at conclusion of the program, was
held at the home or Mrs. C Y.
Cosby with Mrs. John B. Hunt
as co-hostess.
A profusion of orchid chrysan-
themums in vases, and bowls of
roses, artistically arranged, added
color to the rooms. The dining
room table was covered with a
dainty lace cloth centered with a
bowl of rosebuds. Much of the
silver service used in serving the
tea course was brought to the
United States from England by

country to live, as a young wo-
man.

teresting account of the life of

years ago when'she was privil-
eged to see Charles Dickens, and
missed by a few minutes getting
to meet his in person.
• Little ‘Polly’ as she was known
to all, had gone .with her mather
to Brighton, a winter resort on
the southern coast of England,
, while her father, J. Curtis Piller,
was attending to business on the
. continent. They took, rooms di-
rectly across the street from the
hotel in which Dickens was stay-
ing at the time engaged, in'writ-
ing. Loved by all little children,
"Polly" begged, her mother to
take her to call upon Dickens
and her mother promised to ac-
company her upon the morrow.
The. next day while standing
at the window waiting for her
mother to accompany her to visit

Mrs. Lamb who has resided in
Bowie for some 48 years termin-
ated her very interesting narra-
tive by expressing a deep love. ■

Mrs. John B. Hunt presented
Mrs. Lamb, and two other spe-
cial guests upon this occasion.
Mrs. Julia Cree, mother to Mrs.
Cosby, aqd Mrs. R. C. Levister,
93 years of age. with loyely cor-
sages. Mrs. Cosby also presented
the honor guest, Mrs. Lamb, with
a lovely gift.
During the social hour, Mrs.
Cosby poured tea, Mrs. Lamb
served delicious pound cake, and
Mrs. Hunt presided over the
sandwiches, serving paper-thin
bread and butter sandwiches,
prepared as they are in England
for serving with afternoon tea.

a song Mrs. Virgil Baker offered
a prayer. The program from the
Royal Service Magazine was
brought in pageant form with
special music making it more
impressive. Mrs. C. A. Graves
brought the Bible lesson in a
most interesting way with the
members taking part. Mrs. Huff
Cloer dismissed the meeting with
prayer. __________ _______
A delicious refreshment plate
consisting of sandwiches, pickles,
potato chips, pumpkin pie ana
tea with favors on each plate
were served after the meeting.
