A Queer suggestion is being
made in Washington.
Its purport is this:
President Roosevelt and Wen-
dell Willkie are in agreement on
a great fnany questions—ffet-alto-
gether As to de tails but in prin-
ciple.
Suppose then that Franklin D.
is re-elected. Why shouldn’t he
appoine Wendell to a capital post
in his third term cabinet? He al-
ready has indicated his belief
in the desirability of a bi-
partisian set-up in the present
emergency, by naming Henry L.
Stimson and Frank Knox (a cou-
ple of Republicans), respectively,
to head his war and navy depart-
ments. Now, wouldn’t it be still
more politically* open-minded to
hand a portfolio over to his pres- *
ent G- O. P. presidential rival—as-
suming that he wins and that
Wendell is beaten?
But if Wendell wins? He’s as
much pro*defense as the present
White House tenant is. He’s “pYo’'
a lot of the Ww‘Deal’s domestic
objectives. What ’ he critizes
mainly is thq method by which
F. D. R. has tried to arrive at
them. Supposing he’s elected,
wouldn’t it be a'nationally unify-
in gact on his part to pick F. D. R.
as one of his chief cabinet ad-
visers? Awhile ago he was quite
willing to confer with the presi-
dent, iff the hope Of hitting on a
mutually acceptable program that
would forestall any violent read-
justment of policies, in the event
of a change in administrations.
Just in Parenthesis
Speaking parenthetically.
Just'as congress was nearing
adjournment of a recess. Repre-
sentative E. E. Cox of Georgia in-
troduced a resolution expressing
legislative approval of the presi-
lential deal by which the United
States' traded 50 destroyers
John Bull in return for a string
of Yankee military bases on Brit-
ish islands-off our Atlantic coast
and down into the Caribbean.
This wasn't as pro-administra-
tionistic a resolution as may ap-
pear on its surface.
Representative .Cox. though a
Democrat, is an anti-New Dealer.
He considered the destroyer dick-
er a good thing for Unde Sam, but
he didn’t believe that the govern-

r t TRY BOWIE
If you can’t find it in Wichita Falls, Dallas. Fort Worth,
try Bowie. If we were given to sarcasm we might direct the
foregoing remark to those of our citizens who make it, a
practice to go to our neighboring cities to pay more for (he
• Rame things they could buy in Bowie for ieffe. Maybe thfre
are no such citizens in our midst, the reader might say. If
not, this is an exceptional community. We even heard of
a $ity where some of the wives df the grocerymen bought tea,
tpffee and spices from the house-to-house peddler of these
•ommodities, just because he gave premiums. We might say
fcy way of parenthesis that no business man gives anything
away as a fixed policy. All premiums are paid for either
in quality of merchandise or by some other means. Then
we heard of a lady Who went to the big dity. and paid $7.50
for the same pair- of shoes she could have bought at home
for $4.95. We call to mind, too, ^he merchant who was always
raving at the public about buying away from home but who,
when his wife wanted a new bedroom suite, bought it out
‘of town, wlhen his friend next door could have offered him a
better bargain. None of these stories are exaggerations.
They actually happened.
The News dwsn't accept advertising from out-of-town
merchants because it doesn’t believe in pursuing a policy,
th^t will take business from the city upon which we’ depend
to maintain the schools, the churches, the hospitals and every-
thing that makes this such a fine community in which to live.
We don’t think much of a newspaper that will pursue such a
policy and the people in the town where that kind of paper is
published should boycott it if they are backing it -with their
business and influence. And it ought to work both ways.
The home; town should be just that_Jpyi»l to its otyn news-
paper. Their hometown newspaper is the onlv one that cares
two cents about them ot their future.’ It merits their support. | end was fm'itfed

Women’s headaches, nervousness,
cramp-like pain may be symptoms
of functional dysmenorrhea due to
malnutrition, so often relieved by
CARDUI. Principal way it helps
is by increasing appetite, stimulat-
ing flow of gastric juices and so
improving digestidn 'and helping to
build physical resistance. Another
way you may find CARDUI helpful
in reducing periodic distress: Take
it a few"maj's before and during
“the time.” Used for 50 years.
. might reasonably choose Franklin
j). Roosevelt as his state secre-
tary.
They’re not much at odds on
our foreign policy. Wendell thinks
the New Deal 'has bundled- its de-
fensive preparations, but, in gen-
eral, he's as defensive, as Pan-
American, as pro-British, as anti-
Japanese and all.that kind of stuff
as anybody.
It’s hard to see why,, perhaps
with a few modifications, Frank-
lin D. Roosevelt shouldn't make a
first-class secretary of state for
him. And (who knows?) F. D. R.
might be drafted for the job.
If Franklin's re-elected, though,
the situation will be more compli-
cated.
Should that happen, Cordell
Hull assuredly will prefer to hang
onto his state secretarial assign-
ment. and that’s the only portfolio
that Wendell is a bit likely to
deem worthy his notice. Doubt-
less. he’ll be well qualified to pre-
side at” the headquarters of sev-
eral other departments—treasury,
postoffice, interior, commerce, ag-
riculture (he’s a farmer), labor
(he's been a workingman also)
and there are numerous, commis-
sions and such .that he's fit into
admirably.
But. after running for president
(if he’s beaten), he’ll be a wonder
if he doesn’t prefer to get back
into, big business.
All the same, the two alterna-
tive ideas have their boosters.
