Our querist asks: "If baptism
(by 4>att»r) ,ia essential ■ to' salva-
tion, why does Paul thank God
that he baptized only two or
three in Corinth?” When one
reads 1 Cor. 1 U3-17 carefully, he
finds this question answered; so
all I* will have to do is simply
point out that answer.
As discussed last week, the
brethren in Corinth so loved
their preachers, and preferred to
iiear some above others, that they
started to wear the names ‘of
the preachers they loved best.
Some claimed to be of Apollos,
sorhe claimed to be' of Cephas,
.-some ciL.PauL-.elc—.—Instead of.
being Christians only, they tried
to be some particular kind,of a
Christian, they wore man-made
namek Paul did- not want those
he converted to call themselves
"Paulites” and be followers of
him, but he wanted them t0 be
---Christians and followers, of

ful that he baptized no more than
he did lest they be Paulites, and
not Christians. He did not want
to make anything except Chris-
tians.
If the people “of Bowie that I
have taught started calling them-
selves, by my name, I would want
to line up with- the apostle Paul
and thank God that I hadn’t
baptized anymore than I have.
But as long as I can preach the
gospel, convert people to Christ,
and thus make Christians, I want
to baptize every person I can.
Paul’s work was to preach the
gospel. Of course those who
hear and believe the goupel will
obey it, and in that obedience
they will be baptized.
