FIRST BAPTIST PUT ON
BENEVOLENT DRIVE
To further the Christmas
spirit the First Baptist
Church is pu»’inc on a drive
under the direction of the
Training Union committee
to see that no needy family
or child goes through
I Christmas without being re-
membered. Some of the Sun-
k day School classes drew
names of local needy and
handicapped persons rather
than exchange gifts among
themselves. Others became
aware of this gesture and
wanted to have a part. Mem-

Slat' law permit chool district

An interesting feature of the
audit, which covered 12 funds in
addition to the general operating
fund, was the status of the ath-

debtedne.-
The total debt was an accumu-
lation of the pit years and was
mainii v due to the purchase of e-
quipment for athletic teams. Cost
of equipping one boy for football
is established at $135, Allen
pointed out. and Bowie's football
squad has grown from about 40
to this year's 99 in the past two
years requiring a t.
additional expenditure.
Receipts from this year's foot-
ball games, however, totalled
$9,751.92 permitting the school
to pay "ft $5,725.00 in past due
accounts in addition to meeting
current expenses.
About $1,000 is still owed for
uniform and other equipment
and it is expected that this will
be retired from basketball gates
this year. The remainder of the
debt is internal, owed to the
school district for travel expen-
ses and other items which have
already been paid for from other
funds.

Bridgewater had high praise for
the guards also.
Bowie played Clidell in their
opening game of the Decatur
tournament this afternoon at 2 p.
m.
ed with two cases of anti-freeze
and two cases of dynamite, which
was recovered.
A third man, R. L. Johnson, of
Nebraska, also went AWOL with
the pair but left them about
half-way through their maraud-
ing tour and went homd* where
he was apprehended. He Ls not
charged with all of the thefts.
Sheriff Lindsey said the opera-
tions of the two men did not:
indicate they were involved ini
the Bowie thefts. Only cash was |
taken here, he pointed out, while
the pair had never been able to
resist taking everything loose in
other places they had burglarized.
“Their willingness to confess to
all of the other burglaries also
leads us to believe they would
have implicated themselves here,
too, if they had been involved,”
he concluded.
Funds to pay for the marker
have been donated to the divis-
ion association for the past three
years, following the passage of
the joint resolution of the Texas
House and Senate authorizing the
location of the monument on the
capitol grounds.
The lighting 36th was first or-
ganized before World War I as
an Oklahoma and Texas division
and the “T-Arrow” shoulder
patch insignia borrowed the ar-
rowhead as a symbol of Oklaho-
ma and the super-imposed T
stood for Texas.
They started in World War II
as an all-Texas division but
quickly took on a cosmopolitan
look as replacements poured into
the veteran unit from all over
the 48 states.
The "Texas flavor stayed with
it all of the time, however," Col.
Stovall commented to The News.
Work on the project will start

Sailors Confess
To Theft of
Saini Jo Truck
A pair of Texas sailors who
confessed to stealing a loaded
pick-up truck near Saint Jo last
month were arrested at Fort
Stockton last Friday night and
have been gharged" with eight
auto thefts, 15 burglaries and
five armed robberies.
Sheriff Tom Lindsey and Coun-
ty Attorney Earl Fitts questioned
1he men for two days this week
concerning safe burglaries which
'occurred tn Bowie two weeks ago.
The men denied they were in-
volved.
“Since they readily admitted
thefts in six counties and Will-
ingly lead officers to caches of
stolen poods, we doubt if thev
were involved in the
thefts,"
News.
The two men, Elvis Lee Brooks,
17, of Lubbock, and Floyd Ed-
ward White, 24, who lived in
Graham and Wichita Falls, wore
absent without leave from the
naval base at San Diego.
They are presently in
Pinto in jail. They face trials in
at least six Texas counties, in
addition to a Navy Court Mar-
tial.
Thi^men led officers to places
around Possum Kingdom Lake
where they had stored guns,
camping equipment and groceries
they had stolen in their wild

filled with the loot.
