Bowie Day Plans
Are Underway
Subcommittees to make prep-
arations for a gala Bowie Day
at the Texas State Fair are be-
ing formulated.
George Hoeldtke has been
named general chairman for the
event.
A booth to exhibit items of
interest about Bowie will be
givqn to Bowie without charge
for the day, October 18.
The subcommittees will ar-
range displays featuring the so-
cial, recreational, industrial and
agricultural aspects of the area.
A meeting of the committees
will be held at Cotton's Cafe at
10 a.m. Friday to discuss fur-
ther plans.

From West Coast
Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Barker
returned home Thursday night
from California where they had
been vacationing and visiting
their son Richard Barker, Mrs.
Barker and their son Brent in
Santa Ana. The Barkers left
Bowie August 19th with their
daughter Carolyn, for California.
Richard, a 1955 graduate of Bow-
ie High School, is now in the
electronics department for Beck-
man Instruments.
While in California the Bar-
kers visited Disneyland, Knotts
Berry Farm and Farmers Mar-
ket and also enjoyed Huntington
Beach.
Miss Barker flew home last
Monday for work at the Bowie
Manufacturing Plant. She was
met in Dallas by her sister, Mrs.
Bobby McGee and daughter of
Alvord and Mr. and Mrs. Grady
Spain of Bowie.

MARINE PRIVATE Howard
R. Chappell, son of Mrs. Clif-
ford M. Ford of Route 2. Belle-
vue, completed four four weeks
of combat training at Camp
Pendleton, Calif. The individ-
ual training covers tactical and
combat maneuvers required of
every Marine. Under eelected
instructors, the Marine learns
to take his place in small units
—such as th»r'four-map fire
team and the 13-man squad.
Vashli Riles Held
For Mrs. Perkins
Funeral services for Mrs. W.
R. "Malie” Perkins, 80, of Bowie
were held Monday in the Vash-
ti Baptist Chu'rch.
Burial Was in the Vashti Cem-
etery under the direction of Bur-
gess Funeral Home.
Mrs. Perkins, a former long-
time resident of Vashti, died Sat-
urday in a Bowie hospital
Pallbearers were Ardell Lig-
gett, Lewis Ferguson, Dewey
Staley, Jesse Forman, Virgil De-
weber and John Phagan.
Survivors include three sisters
Mrs. Mark Goza, Ryan, Okla.,
Mrs. Sam Hodges, Bowie, and
Mrs. L. R. Murray of Wichita
Falls.
Tickets Given:
Virginia Trotter Jones, Bowie,

Mrs. Birdie Evans
Dies Here Monday
Mrs. Birdie Evans, daughter
of a Montague County pioneer
family, died at Bowie Convales-
cing home Monday morning at
the age of 78.
She was the daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs Clark Mc-
Donald and was bom January
8, 1885, at the Queen's Peak
community near Bowie.
Services were held Tuesday
at the Burgess Memorial Chap-
el, with Rev. Darius McKay,pas-
tor of the Southside Baptist
Church of Bowie, officiating.
Interment was in the Hope-
well Cemetery under the direc-
tion of Burgess Funeral Home.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Sam, one daughter, Mrs.
Amy Dorman; and one son,
Clifford Evans, both of. Bowie;
one sister, Mrs. Georgia Huth
of Bowie, six grandchildren, and
nine great-grandchildren.

ingham, Wilburn Cross, Ricfi-
ard Cowley and Norris Gant

Jim Roth. 22, has been honor-
ed by the Bowie Lions Club as
the Most Courteous and Safe
Driver of the Month for July.
The selection was made by the
Bowie police department, which
had closely observed Roth’s dri-
ving habits during the period of
the contest.
School is scheduled to begin
September 9, at 8:00 p.m. in the
vocational agriculture building.
OtheY meetings in the series of
four will be held September 10,
11 and 12th.
During.. the dates the short
course is in progress. Barton
will be available to assist far-
mers with individual problems
and to provide on-the-farm in-
struction, according to Shackel-
ford.
Farmers interested in attend-
ing the short course should write
or call the Teacher of Vocation-
al Agriculture, Kenneth Shack-
elford. An entry fee of $5.00 will
be charged

A reception was held in the
annex of the church.
The refreshment table was
covered with a white clpth and
at one end sat the four-tiered
wedding cake, topped with a
bride and broom under an arch
of flowers. The crystal punch
bowl complemented the table on
the other.
Mmes. Imogene Brewer, Bev-
erley Scott and Helen Steadham
presided at the table. Miss Mary
Sirman sat at the bride's book.
Mr. and Mrs. David Brewer
will make their home in Wich-
ita Falls, where he will attend
Midwestern. Both are graduates

found ourselves right in the big

squabble. Attendance at the bud-
get hearing was heart-warming

crowd was spirited.
Just to put things in perspec-
tive, the budget for the 1958-59

**A farm welding short course
for adult farmers will be held
Sept. 9 thru 12th under the spon-
sorship of the Bowie High School
Vocational Agriculture Depart-
ment, according to T. A Harbin,
Superintendent and K e-n n e t h
Shackelford, Teacher of Voca-
tional Agriculture.
Mr. Joel R. Barton, welding
specialist with the Vocational
.Agriculture Division of the Tex-
as Education Agency and the
Engineering at Texas A&M Col-
lege, will do the instructing in
the course. He is headquartered
at Texas A&M College.
Mr. Barton is a n a t i v e of
Glasscock. County, Texas, and
was reared on a west Texas
ranch. He attended grade school
in San ^ngelo and graduated
from high- -school at Big Lake,
. ♦ Texas. He holds a B. S. degree
in animal husbandry from Tex-
as A & M. After five years as
a pilot in the U. S. Air Force,
Mr. Barton served as an agri-
cultural specialist in Texas State
hospitals and special schools. In
addition to tegular classes, he
set up farm shops and gave in-
struction in farm welding and
general farm repair.
"Many welding short courses
in various parts of the state have’
been taught by Mr. Barton and
all have met with outstanding
success," according to L. I. Sam-
uel, area supervisor of vocation-
agriculture, Denton. Arrange-
ments for the adult education
short course in welding and in
other fields are made through
Samuel’s * (Area Supervisor) of-
fice.
