Bell officials in the Panhandle
area, and was not expected
back in his office before todav
(Thursday).
However, the Utility Com-
mission set rates for cities by
population brackets. For ex-
ample, in a city the size of
Floydada (comparable to Cana-
dian) the base rate ordered by
the Commission would be $4.75
for residential and $7.50 for
commercial. In Canadian these
base rates are currently $5.75
for residences and $11.50 for
businesses. If the rate ordered
by the Commission stands up,
Canadian's rates might be
expected to drop.
Bell had proposed rate
increases in Canadian last
January which would have
made the one party residential
rate $6.10, and the business
rate $13.25. Canadian's City
Council rejected these rate
increases in the spring, after

September.
The telephone company may
appeal the rates set by the
y Commission to the
courts, but has not announced
any final decision on that.
District Manager Johnny
Uemmons in Amarillo told the
Amarillo News that "no definite
decision has been made."
Clemmons said the company
had not had an opportunity to
study the Commission order.
Rate increases granted the
company were in increased long
distance charges within Texas,
which will rise by $65 million a
year; in 20-cent pay phone tolls;
and in increases in charges for
special equipment.
Directory information calls
will be 20 cents.
But basic service charges for
residential and business tele-
phones in most Texas cities will
remain where they are or be
reduced, if the Commission
order is carried out.
The basic service rates
ordered by the Commission
range from $8 for Houston
residents to $4.75 for residents
