County bond election vote Saturd
Hemphill county voters will
go to the polls Saturday to
approve (or reject) a proposed
$300,000 county bond issue for
reconstruction of Red Deer
bridge north of the city of
Canadian.
The ramshackle 35-year old
1.037 foot bridge provides the
only crossing over the occa-
sionally tumultuous Red Deer
between Canadian and Miami,
and the only road access from
Canadian to that triangle of
land formed by the junction of
Red Deer Creek and the
Canadian River.
There is a serviceable
low-water crossing of the Red
Deer paralling the old bridge,
constructed by the county a
carr.

oilfield service truck crashed
through two spans of the bridge
near midstream, and this
crossing now carries most of
the traffic as heavy vehicles
avoid the repaired bridge.
There is also a low-water
crossing of Red Deer at
Mendola, near the western
edge of the county; but the only
other bridge is at Miami. 25
miles to the southwest.
The present bridge here
consists of 15 steel suspension
type spans, mounted on
concrete piers...each span
61 feet in length. Until August
1975 there were 17 spans. Two
