Old llieater has
a
Canadian's pioneer movie
house, the downtown Palace
Theatre which first opened its
doors in the early years of the
century as "The Pastime Thea-
ter", is having a sort of "grand
re-opening" next week as the
new operators, the Ed Nolls,
show off an extensive remodel-
ing and refurbishing project.
The improvements on the
building aren't complete. "We
overestimated when we
thought we could have even-
thing done by this time," Noll
said this week.
The work will go on. but the
Nolls have scheduled a free
family show next Tuesday after-
noon...no ticket required...to
introduce the community to
their improved theater. Starting
time is 2 p.m.
As adults grow older, less
energy is needed to keep
the body functioning.

On Tuesday night, the Palace
begins a three-night run of the
popular musical "Hair" for its
first area showing.
New projection and sound
equipment has been installed,
new air conditioning, new car-
peting throughout, and the old
movie house has been given a
thorough cleaning and over-
hauling.
New modern glass doors are
being installed in the lobby,
with a new inside ticket booth
and concession stand.
The Palace began life as The
Pastime more than sixty-five
years ago. The first movie may
have been "Runaway June" by
George Randolph Chester,
which was the earliest feature
which could be found advertised
at The Pastime in The Canadian
Record. It opened on January
23. 1915.
The Pastime then was owned
by T.V. (Virge) Humphrey.
There was at least one vaude-
ville performance at The Pas-
time prior to that, however. The
vaudeville team of Miller &
Adams, proclaimed as "the best
vaudeville performers south of
Chicago," opened at the Pas-
time for a three-night run on
December 8-9-10, 1914.
Tickets were 10 cents for
children, 20 cents for adults.
Mrs. Paul Bryant recalls mo-
vies at The Pastime dating from
1916 and says vaudeville teams
used to stop off in Canadian en
route via Santa Fe Railway from
Kansas City to Fort Worth, but
recalls that they often perform-
ed at the old Santa Fe Reading
Room or at the Canadian Opera
House, as well as at the movie
theatre.
When the name of The Pas-
time was changed to The Palace
is not certain, but the theatre
building which now houses The
Palace was Canadian's first and
only movie house, and has been
in almost continuous operation
since the early years of the
century.
