From Small Beginning They

Organization.
Charlotte X. C -May 25. Amazement
no doubt would be expressed by Sam
Pilling Jeremiah Horroclcs and Dr.
Henry Taylor the three Englishmen
tvho upon adopting America as their
future home brought with them from
England the idea of and started the first
building and loan society in the United
States in 1S31 if they could have been
present here today at the opening of
the eighteenth annual convention of the
United States League of Local Build-
ing and Loan associations. Little did
they think perhaps when they organ-
ized the first society la Frankford now
a part of Philadelphia that the idea
would grow into the popularity and
power it now possesses.
Delegates from Everywhere.
At today's convention were delegates
from all corners of the Union repre-
senting about 0000 associations with
a membership of nearly two millions
and total assets of almost S00000000.
The league will discuss at its sessions
todaj' and those to be held tomorrow
matters for the protection and promo-
tion of building association interests.
Governor W. "W. Kitchin himself came
to Charlotte to welcome the delegates
to the state. Mayor T. W. Hawkins ex-
tended a welcome for the city and Witt-
kowsky on behalf of the North Caro-
lina Building and Loan association. Jay
"W. Sutton of Sault Ste Marie Mich.
president of the national organization
responded to the address of the gover-
nor and first vice president James H.
Mackay to the other addresses.
A number of addresses were deliv
ered on subjects relating to the busi-
ness of the members- Esgovernor Win-
field T. Durbin of Indiana spoke bn
"Corporate Surety Bonds."
Phenomenal GroiTth.
Phenomenal growth and prosperity of
the local building and loan associations
of the United States are shown in the
renort nf swrptiirv T-T "P fAllnrins of
(Cincinnati who said that the gain in
assets of the building and loan associa-
tions in the country in 1904 over the
previous year amount to over $70000-
000 the largest increase in a single
year in the association's history.
"The number of these Institutions" he
said "Is 5713 with 2016651 members
and with assets aggregating $S56332-
719. This is an increase for the year
of 114 associations 96396 members and
$72156966 in total assets."
In assets the report shows tne great-
est gains have been made in Ohio $14-
164077; Pennsylvania $12989255; New
Jersey $5269927; Massachusetts $4-
G05731 and Illinois $4413500.
The report showed further that the
average amount due each member in-
creased from $367.22 to $424.63 a gain
of 15.6 percent.
