Do the principles of the Sev-
enth Commandment apply only—_
to the overt act on the part of
the married people? Jesus in the
Sermon on the Mount interpre-
ted this Commandment. He
quoted it and then said, “But I
say unto you. That whosoever
looketh on a woman to lust after
her hath committed adultery
with her already in his heart"
(Matt. 5:28).
Jesus did not enlarge upon the
Commandment. He simply inter-
preted it, showing its spiritual
meaning, that it refers not just
to the-marriage relation and the
I overt act, but to unlawful pas-
sion. whether it finds express-
ion or not. Purity is a quality
that must characterize the whole
of life, even to the most secret
desires of the heart.

Do divorce and remarriage
constitute a violation of .the Sev-
enth Commandment? This was a
common practice in Jesus' day,
As it ts in ours. And the Phari-
sees thought that the law of
Moses justified it. To them Jesus
said that Moses, permitted di-

ness of men's hearts, “but from
the beginning of the creation of
God made them male and fe-
male" (Mark 10:6). Then he ci-
ted the passage from the Old
Testament that indicates God's
plan. The union is to be per-
petual, unbroken.

fend thee, cut it off, . . . for it is ' refrigerators Wednesday night, I

thy members should perish, and
not that thy whole body should
be cast into hell” (Matt. 5:29-30).
Paul said, “I keep my body un-
der,” which' seems to be com-
pliance with the spiritual law
here involved. The body must
not be used as the instrument
of sin, which comes from the
inner man.
Citizenship Awards
We think one of the finest contributions to the commu-
nity each year is the presentation of th<* citizenship awards
to students by the Lions Club of Bowe.
A large number of boys and girls have been influenced
for good by these recognitions and gifts, since the project
was started by the Lions a few years ago.
The biggest need the world has today, it seems to us,
is that most folks need to know how to just get along with
folks.
In making the citizenship awards certain requirements
include various good habits, attitudes and kindly responses
in the student’s contacts and relationships with other stu-
dents and the teachers and summing it up. meaning hbw
they get along with others.
’Some of this ability to get along amicably with othels
seems to be sojnetitnes partially inherent, but usually it
develops from home environment, in the main. Some is ac-
quired in' school. Our biggest weakness is apparent in the
homes. If children do not have the example of others in
the home getting along well with'Cach other especially the
parents how can the youngsters bo expected to show exam-
ples of the right sort'.’ The whole world needs to re-empha-
size this thing of. just “getting along with folks." It .‘.tarts
with the kids, and the good citizenship awards are certain-
ly in the right directioiTT

Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things ai'e hon-
’ est, whatsoever things aeu-jusL.whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoevc'r things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good
report; if there lie any virtue, and if there be any praise,
think on these things. I’hilippians 4:8,
One method of arriving at the logical solution of an
issue is to pursue the question raised to the limits of its
possibilities. It might be done in the issue involving the seiz-
ure of the steel plants.
If the President has the power to seize the steel plants,
then he has the power to seize the entire oil industry of the
country which recently has been threatened with a strike
that would be as disastrous in its results. Now, seizing the oil
industry would be going much farther, ideqlpgically. than
. seizing the steel plants. It would involve seizing our greatest
mineral resource.
But pursue the possibilities further. If the President
can seize any and all industries, fixing wages on the one
i hand, and prices of that industry’s products on the other,
then he is in position permanently to socialize the entire in-
dustry of the country if he can get a little co-operation from
the labor unions.
It puts a small organized minority in the position of forc-
ing socialization regardless of the will of the majority. And
it could happen if the present drift toward labor union
power on the one hand, and executive power on
continues. —Dallas

"ATTITUDES TOWARD THE BIBLE"
PAUL S. GRAY.. Mlnlslar.
TTTe Seventh Commandment,
"Thou shalt not commit adul-
tery” .(Ex. 20:14) is grounded, in
the purposes of God for man-
kind. “God created man in his
own image, in the image of God
created he him; male ai\d female
created he them" (Gen. 1:27). He
made 'Y'oman from man (Gen.
2:18-25) ‘ and declared, “There-
fore shall a man leave his father
ajid Ins mother, and shall cleave
unto his wife: and they shall be
one flesh" (Gen. 2:24);
In these passages there seem
to be these important lessons:
(1) the permanent union of man I
and woman in marriage— "one
flesh,” (2) marriage as a divine
institution not be broken—“let
not man put asunder” (Matt. 19:
•»». (3) marriage as the first and
the highest and most important
human relations, and (4) mar- ■
riage as typifying the covenant |
relation ^between Christ and the i
church (Kph. 5:22-23; Bev. 19:
(i-9).
The fulfilment ot God's pur-
pose for. man requires that rela-
tionship of man and woman in
marriage be kept pure. The
family is the first and most im-
portafmihit in society, and the
family is established when mar-
riage is consummated.
II. Interpretation
Are the moral standards of
the Bible too strict? Is it nec-
essary for a Christian to maintain
the spiril.of unstained purity of
thought and conduct suggested
by the passages for study today?
Do the principles of this lesson
apply to Christian's, non-Chris-
tians, married, and single people
alike?
As we examine the passages,
we shall try to find the answers
to these questions with the rea-
son bai'k of them- We will need
to ke<g> in mind, as we examine
the suggested passages, that sex
is one of the major factors for
good <>r ill in the life of man. We
must remember also that viola-
tion of the Seventh Command-
ment and neglect of its principles
constitute one of the gravest
dangers to society in our day.
The study of this lesson by all
of our people should result in a
great movement toward higher
living and wholesome conduct
throughout our land.
