I Watsons Visited Rome
On European Trip
CARD OF THANKS
We wish to thank everyone (Editor's note: Following is the
foj being so kind and thoughtful. last of a series of articles on a
to do all that was needed to be 1 trip Mr. and Mrs Watson took to
done at the time of our recent. Europe during the summer,
bereavement. The flowers were Mrs Watson is the author of the
series of articles.) f
Last of Watson Articles
Within an hour after leaving
Bologna, we were entering the
Appenines. There were fields of
corn up to the passes of Raticosa
•and Fieta. We arrived in Flor-
] ence at 6 p m. This city is sit-
uated on the River Arno, and is
1 capital of Tuscany. Many of the
world’s greatest artists including
Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci
and others have been associated
with it. We visited Medici Chap-
el, Giottis Tower, Pitti Palace,
Dantes House—and other places
of interest. We could understand
why Florence is .counted among
the world’s loveliest cities. Cr.,
Sunday, August 7, several of us
attended services of the Church
of Chris! there. Of course all of
it—even the hymns, were in
Italian, but we enjoyed it very
much and felt we were very near
to Heaven. We had a worship
service every Sunday, usually in
our. own group, since we were
on the move so much.
All of us decided to sec the
Leaning Tower of Pisa although
it was not on our itinerary. In
my ignorance I had always
thought of it as standing alone,
but found that Pisa is a city and
this tower is a part of it. I was
so glad we went because it was
a very interesting experience. B.
E. with others, climbed to the
top of it, but, I stayed on the
ground. There were a lot of side-
walk shops—one or two of which
I visited.
On our way to Rome—driving
through the lovely Tuscan Hills
—along magnificent Arno Valley,
we saw very nice old country
homes along the river. Vineyards
to the top of the mountains two
thousand feet. Some are ter-
raced. Orchards of olive trees.
Next was Perugia where the
Etruscans have left many thae-
es of their civilization and art.
It became a Roman city about
295 B. C. &nd evidence of this
still exists.
Assissi is on a mountain side
of about ten levels—the lowest
of which was half way up. A
number of towns in this area
arc so built and all the towns
arc surrounded ■ by-walls. Again
we saw oxen pulling loaded wag-
ons. The memory of the Catholic
St. Francis is greatly revered in
this city of his birth, because
of his life of piety and self de-
nial.
We could see great fields of
tobacco in bloom. In N. Italy it
was still very small. Now the
road runs high on the mountain-
side above the Tiber river. Very
beautiful scenery in the Appen-
ines.
Built on seven hills and crossed
by the winding Tiber river.
Rome is the capital of Italy, and
is also the center of Catholicism,
for within its walls lies the
smallest state in the world, Vat-
ican City, residence of the Pope.
We saw this place and also his
residence in the country. We vis-
ited other prominent places,
among them St. Peters Basilico
(and saw the splendid bronze
statue of St. Peter.) the colosseum
and at night, the Sebastian Cata-
combs. We were told there were

wes our guide. It was a grue-
some experience. He Sa d there
were forty-two others in Rome.
On the way to Frai.coti Orphans
Home next day, we saw miles of
old Roman aqueduct. Most of it
is in ruins but part of it is still
in use. We saw "The Appian
Way”—parts of it had been left
| without the black top so that the
| original cobblestones could be
seen.
We left Rome on the new
Appian way. Old Roman aque-
ducts, near the road. Appenine
Mountains to the east. Broad lev-
el plains to the west with lots
of grapes.
Pompeii was a
which was comj
without warning in 79 A. I>. by
volcanic eruption of Vesuvius.
Our guide told us that even the
location of the place
gotten; but finally it
earthed and restored. This, would
have to be actually visited to
be appreciated. We marveled at
the detailed work of the restor-
ation. 1 hud a feeling that’some'
of the original inhabitants
,ti should be around somewhere.)
Qn | Human bodies and those of dogs
and other animals were preser-
ved in the ashes.
We made a short stop at Amal-
fi—then drove on to Priano and
Positano—characteristic mass of
tiny multi-colored houses piled
up against a cliff, and a favorite
abode oj writers and artists.
Next is Sorrento, which has been
the home of kings, musicians,
writers and artists throughoutthe
ages. Looking down the sheer
cliffs we could see the crystal-
clear water and the little harbor
Piccolo Saint Angelo, where the
boats dock and the fishermpn
mend their nets. Across the bay,
directly opposite, we could see
Naples at its best-gleaming dis-
tantly in the* brilliant, sun. To the
left, seemingly just a stone’s
throw from the mainland, is Ca-
. pri, while at the base of the bay,
far down to the* right, we noted
Vesuvius in the background.
We- had the choice of either
one of the two drives to Sor-
rento and wfe chose the newest-—
most beautiful one. Of this drive
it is said that, it is the most
spectacular one in the world.
There were mountains by the |
sea shore. Road very high alxive
the sea on the mountain side. A
two hours drive with fifteen
hundred turns- most of which
were so sharp that if two cars
met at a turn, one must back
up until the other one negoti-
ates the turn. Our bus met an-
the turn twice. They
stopped very short, in time to
avoid a crash. We went by
motor boat to Capri. It is cer- I
tainl.v a fabulous Isle. It was
fust occupied about 1000 B. C l
by the Greeks. Capri is a very <
beautiful park-like place. No-
thing can detract from the en-
chantment of its fantastic rocks
—p e c u 1 i a r architecture—and
(they say) year around spring-
like climate. We transferred to
small row boats all of us
stooped as low as we could man-
age and entered into world fa-
mous Blue Grotto. The water
was a very deep blue—we en-
joyed the experience. Later we
motored to Anacap'ri, the other
small village on Capri, also San
Michele Villa of Axel Munthe.
