“A lot of folks will argue with you
on how good the ‘good old days’ were
but not many folks will argue that
times haven’t changed. A lot of boys
and girls in high schools and colleges
work on part-time jobs and especial-
ly summer jobs. These students had
income tax withheld from their
wages but did not make over $600 in
many cases. Fortunately, the law
provides for Dad to claim them as an
exemption as well as allowing the
student an exemption for himself on
his own income tax return, provid-
ing Dad furnished chief support
(more than 50%) for junior. It will
pay the students to look up their
Form W-2 statement of income tax
withheld and be ready to file their
income tax return on January 1. The
sooner they file, the sooner they will
get a refund of the income taxes
withheld from their wages last sum-

____——_
Just the vaguest hint that jobs
may not be as plentiful as they once
were is doing miracles for the na-
tion’s business community.
Many workers, used to the “em-
ploye’s market” of flush times, have
decided to come forth with that ex-
tra spark they’ve been holding in re-
serve.
Like a big Pittsburgh retailer told
the “Wall Street Journal”: “Clerks
are not only getting to work on time,
but some show up a half hour early.
Imagine.”
Meantime, a Chicago office man-
ager reports that “our girls have cut
their coffee breaks from 20 to 10
minutes.” And, oddly, absenteeism
is down not only among white collar
workers but along the production
line.
Even though unemployment is
only 2.6 million nationally, it’s ob-
viously having some wholesome side
effects. Who knows, maybe the ag-
gressive free enterprise spirit will be
awakened among workers grown
soft in the boom. Better still, the
day may come when the “eager
beaver” won’t be an object of scorn
by his fellow workers. — Jackson
(Miss.) State Times.
