of the boat reaches out.
man, however, always should be
careful not to disturb all the waters
which will affect the fishing of the
man in the back of the boat.
Pick your shots. Lay your plug in
where there is likely to be a bass.
Twitch it, jerk it or chug it, accord-
ing to the make of lure you are us-
ing. Wind in a couple of times, and
then do it again.
Sometimes when you are fishing in
brush waters, or in moss pockets, it
pays to leave your plug where it
falls, for 30 seconds or more. Give it
a slight twitch occasionally. Some
bass finally get curious.
In brush fishing, you’ll hang your
plug many times. But you’ll also
get bass. The fellow who never
hangs a plug doesn’t usually get the
most bass.
You can go on and on about the
methods of top water fishing. It is
good on quiet, still water, in the early
morning or evening. It is a wonder-
ful way to catch bass around lily
pads, moss beds, rocky shorelines, in
the brush, or among the tree stumps.
Cane Pole Fishing-
Long the favorite system of thou-
sands has been cane pole fishing. It
may be the lazy way to catch fish,
but it also contributes a great deal to
the contentment of many thousands
of fisherman.
Go anywhere and you’ll find pole
fishermen. Usually they are wear-
ing flop hats, or blue bonnets. But,
it also is pretty certain that there’ll
be a .stringer of mixed fish hanging
in the water nearby.
Now comes South Bend with a new
rod for jig .and pan fishing. It is
called the Lazy Day. It is a 10-foot
telescoping glass rod, with a wooden
handle. - Softxe of these rods are
equipped with line keepers so that
the lines can be wound on the keep-
ers when- the rod is closed.
The combination costs more than
a. cane pole ($7.95 to $11.95), but it
also has .many worthwhile features
to recommend it. For instance a 10-
foot rod closes to approximately half
its length, and can be carried in the
back bf an aiutomobile without any
trouble.
There’s a big day coming for these
extension type rods.
A young man who had just
ceived his degree from college
rushed out and exclaimed, “Here I
am, World; I have my A. B.!”
And the World replied, “Sit down,
Son, and I’ll teach you the rest of the
alphabet.”

Right now bass fshermen
winding up the top-water season.
This is the type of fishing we
dream of. Unfortunately, however,
too few of us get out often enough
to enjoy it to the fullest;
There is a lot of luck to bass fish-
ing. A lot of science too! The secret
of success is in using the right plug
in the right place. True, there are
times when an old bass will hit on
anything. But, there are other times
when it seems he will hit on nothing.
Did you say that that usually is the
time you go fishing? I feel the same
way too—and far too often.
While many fish are caught for
some reason or another, the man who
comes in with a good stringer of big
fish usually does it because he knew
what he was doing.
A good example of that occurred
recently when a group of fishing
tackle salesmen beat the brush in
I^Lake Whitney. They came up with
more five-pound bass in one after-
noon than any of the old timers who
were there ever remembered seeing
in any one day.
Naturally these salesmen were ex-
perts in casting. However, they also
knew how to study the lay of the
land. It couldn’t be said that any
one plug was better than another,
because each was using his own par-
ticular brand, and all paid off. The
two fishermen who came in for the
top prizes were Dave Hawk of Cor-
pus Christi and Ray Bellinger of San
Antonio. Dave makes Pico lures and
Ray sells Silaflex rods and Langley
reels.
Both are wonders in the. use of rod
and reel. So were all the other reps.
But the big payoff came for this
team because they picked out places
that were natural for bass.
They not only worked the points
and the pockets. They worked water
where it was evident that a fault line
lay beneath. For instance, if a rock
ledge protrudes into the water, study
its range. If there is a known drop-
off beneath the surface, fish paral-
lel to this reef, not across it. In that
way you’ll attract the big bass on
the deep side, as well as the yearlings
that might be playing near the sur-
face.
If there is . a little drainage cut en-
tering the lake, where water from
the countryside flows in to make a
sandbar, that usually is a good place,
too. Food particles enter the lakes
at such places. Small fish feed on
this plankton. Big fish feed on the
little ones.
Some people fish with top water
lures almost all the time. They get
fish. It is known that a bass will
dash 20 feet to take a lure if he
wants it.
Top-water fishing follows the
same general pattern, even though a
good top-water fisherman works ac-
cording to his own experience.
For the beginner, top water fish-
ing is much easier. He can watch his
plug work. He is less likely to get
hung and lose a plug. And he can
have plenty of fun when a bass hits.
Working along the shore line the
man in the back of the boat takes the
close-in water; the man in the front

HONEY HARBOUR, Ont.—A ma-
jor advance in cancer research was
reported today by a U. S. woman
scientist who said she has used a sin-
gle virus to cause many types of can-
cer in experimental animals.
Dr. Sarah E. Stewart of the Na-
tional Cancer Institute at Bethesda,
Md., told the Canadian Cancer Re-
search Congress she has indused as
many as 29 different types of cancer
in mice using a virus extracted from
a single type of tumor-leukemia or
blood cancer.
Her paper gave support to the
long-held theory that cancer is
transmitted by a virus. These dis-
ease-producing agents in other forms
are known to be responsible for
polio, influenza and measles.
Advance Lauded
While some of Dr. Stewart’s col-
leagues had reservations about the
importance of her work, Dr. Arthur
W. Ham, head of biological research
at the Ontario Cancer Institute in
Toronto, described it as “the most
stimulating thing that has happened
in cancer research in years.”
Dr. E. A. Mirand of the New York
state-supported Roswell Park Me-
morial Institute at Buffalo said the
cancer treatment and research cen-
ter has already checked and verified
Dr. Stewart’s work.
The gray-haired woman scientist’s
seven years of work is expected to
lead to a grant concentration of re-
search on virus causation of cancer
in general. She herself said she
could not say how soon her findings
can be applied to human cancer,
explained it will first have to
shown that a virus causes certain
types of human cancer and this
not been established.
